Nintendo Announces Nintendo TVii

The Wii U's TVii app didn't quite make it out in time for launch, but Nintendo is now making good on its earlier promise to get it out quickly The free app is now confirmed for a December 20, 2012 release in North America, a date referred to in most circles as "tomorrow."

TVii adds a second screen element to your channel-swapping experience, building on the Wii U GamePad's existing universal remote features. Users will be able to pair up the tablet controller with their cable service and any other content delivery service (a la Hulu Plus) as well as access secondary content such as movie info or sports stats. TVii also features built-in social hooks, alloing users to access Miiverse, Twitter, and the like.

The TVii app will be completely free to download when it launches tomorrow in the United States and Canada, supporting "cable and satellite providers in both regions as well as direct integration with Amazon Instant Video and Hulu Plus subscriptions in the United States," according to the press release. Netflix and TiVo support is expected to be added in early 2013 (again, in the U.S.).

Yoshi's Land Wii U Listed By Online Retailers

As it turns out, Yoshi's Land for Wii U may actually be a real thing. The title popped up mere hours after the Wii U's November 18, 2012 launch after a new console owner accidentally stumbled into a debug mode containing a testing version of Miiverse that featured a Community listing for a game called Yoshi's Land Wii U.

Nintendo promptly plugged up the exploit and issued a statement that basically framed anything appearing in the backend Miiverse as unconfirmed and purely for testing/mock-up purposes. Only now the Canadian portals for Best Buy and Future Shop offer up product listings -- complete with a synopsis -- for Yoshi's Land Wii U (via Polygon).

Aliens: Colonial Marines "Survivor" Multiplayer Trailer »

Gearbox Software continues to tease fans with bits of information about Aliens: Colonial Marines, set to arrive on February 12, 2013. The latest reveal focuses on the Survival multiplayer mode, which pits a squad of four humans against multiple waves of Xenomorphs.

It's not clear if the new mode is simply a Horde-style co-op situation or if you're actually going to face off against player-controlled Xenos in each wave, in a sort of Horde-meets-Beast arrangement (continuing the Gears of War comparison). It's looking slick though, especially with the abundance of Xeno types on display in this trailer.

Hulu Plus Is Up And Running On Your Wii U

Nintendo's Wii U launch was relatively smooth, all things considered, though several notable features were missing when the console arrived on November 18, 2012. Users could see Hulu Plus app right there on the home screen, but the actual service hasn't worked yet... until now.

Hulu Plus is now officially up and running on the Wii U, the streaming video content provider confirms. Much like the Netflix app, users can browse through their options right from the Wii U GamePad's touchscreen or use it to call up info on a particular video while it's playing. The Hulu Plus app also supports second screen play, meaning you can have the video stream directly to the smaller screen.

New Super Mario Bros. U Video Review »

You need to check out our New Super Mario Bros U review. The appearance of a new Mario game seems to go along with the launch of every Nintendo console, and the Wii U is no different. Sure, old Mario is nostalgia, but is it actually good? We turned to Jason "Make A" Wishnov to get his expert opinion.

Here's a taste of his New Super Mario Bros U review:

"New Super Mario Bros U is the first ever first-party Nintendo game produced in high definition, and I’m very unsurprised to say it matters very little. The graphical style (save for a few relatively inspired levels in the Soda Jungle) is cribbed from previous entries in the NSMB series, which was never much worth your attention. Some impressive backgrounds via parallax scrolling are achieved, and boy do those coins look crisp, but this is not a game that in any way shows off the graphical capabilities of the Wii U. Combined with a remarkably disappointing musical effort, in which no risks are taken and entire songs are stolen wholesale from previous entries, one can’t help but shake the feeling of a very un-Nintendo level of polish here."

What It Is

The Wii U is the successor to the Wii, featuring HD graphics, a touchpad controller, and a suped up processor. There are two versions of the Wii U available: one with 8GB of flash memory, and one with 32GB, but both come with the GamePad and are compatible with your existing WiiMotes. While the new Wii U offers HD graphics, it does offer backwards compatibility with your old Wii games in standard definition. Although you will be able to play Wii titles, the machine doesn't have the ability to up the resolution to HD.

Wii U Backend The Victim Of An Accidental Hacking

It seems that the admin dashboard for the Wii U's Miiverse was briefly accessible by one and all, as one NeoGAF user discovered while he was trying to set up his Nintendo Network friends list (protip: you have to actually go to the friends list app, accessible from the Home menu). While "messing around in Miiverse," NeoGAF's Trike found his way into a secret debug menu that included access to a prototype, all-Japanese Miiverse and a list of admins.

Further exploration revealed a few facts which may or may not be true, given the mock-up nature of this prototype Miiverse. New Communities for the Wii U's game-specific social network were spotted, for "Metal Gear Solid," "Resident Evils," "Soul Hackers," and, excitingly, "Yoshi's Land Wii U." Nintendo reportedly fixed the backend exploit quickly, reiterating in a public statement that what people saw was, in fact, just a "mock-up."

Nintendo Wii U Release Date And Price Revealed

Here's a fun fact relating to your newly purchased Wii U console: the Nintendo Network account that you created on it is locked now to that console. This means that you can't sign into your account from another user's console and that if your Wii U is lost, stolen, or replaced for one reason or another, you'll be creating a new account for yourself.

Nintendo's support page suggests that this won't be a forever situation, at least with regards to accessing your account from other devices. "In the future, you will be able to use your Nintendo Network Account with future Nintendo consoles and other devices, such as PCs," the support page reads. Up to 12 Nintendo Network IDs can be registered per console, but for now they'll have to live there and only there.

This of course raises question of what happens to your owned licenses for digital content should your Wii U need to be replaced for one reason or another. We've checked in with Nintendo on this; stay tuned for more info as soon as we hear it.
