Super Smash Bros For The Wii U And 3DS Don't Have A Dev Teams Yet

Nintendo surprised the viewers of its latest streaming Nintendo Direct press conference with the revelation that Namco Bandai will be developing the next Super Smash Bros. game (via Gamasutra). Series creator and director Masahiro Sakurai is collaborating with the third-party publisher on the game, and the new team that he's working with will hopefully bring some fresh ideas into the series.

The next entry in the Super Smash Bros. beat 'em up series was actually first revealed at E3 2011 as a Wii U and Nintendo 3DS release. There's been no movement on the project since its initial announcement, with Sakurai and the Namco Bandai team only just getting started recently. In other words, we're probably going to have to wait a little bit before this game becomes a reality.

What are your hopes for the next Super Smash Bros.? Do you think the series has become stale over time? What do you think Namco Bandai brings to the equation that Nintendo hasn't on its own?

Texts From Video Gaming Companies -- Nugget From The Net

Among pictures of puppies, the "Texts From ___" craze is one of my favorite things on the net. Today our phone's buzzing with texts from video game companies, and they're as hysterical as you'd hope. There are a few more after the break from companies like Nintendo, Rare, Capcom, EA, Sega, and Sony. If you're a fan of this type of thing you won't want to miss these pictures. They're really funny!

Nintendo Shows Off Wii U; Introduces GamePad, Miiverse

According to Nintendo, the Wii-U's Miiverse social network won't connect to other networks like Facebook or Twitter. The Wii-U will allow a ton of social connectedness between Wii-U players, but the outside world will have to get along without auto-generated updates as to your progress in New Super Mario Bros. Wii U.

Nintendo of Europe’s managing director of marketing and public relations Laurent Fischer put it this way: “I have three devices permanently doing that already; what is our benefit to do so also?”

Rayman Legends Wii U Features

The German version of Amazon is listing a Wii U release date as well as a price for the next-gen console. According to the site, the Wii U release date could be December 21, 2012 in Europe. Amazon.de has listed the Nintendo Wii U at €399.99, but said the price has not yet been set, so it may be different.

Before you add a Wii U to your Christmas shopping list, keep in mind that retail sites are notorious for using place-holder dates for eagerly awaited products, and this is far from a confirmation of the Wii U release date or price.  For their part, Nintendo issued a standard statement saying that the company does not comment on rumor or speculation, so there's no help there.

The official, Nintendo-approved release window is "Holiday 2012." Personally, I think it will come a little earlier than December 21, maybe closer to early November or late October.

Wii U E3 2011

The Wii U will be able to provide a home for free-to-play games, as Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed in the company's E3 2012 analyst Q&A session (via GamesRadar). The console apparently features an elaborate enough Digital Rights Management system to support developers interested in "additional e-commerce options" like "free to play and microtransactions."

Asked if the support for free-to-play can be seen as a sign that Nintendo might soon tread in that direction with a first-party game, Iwata stated pretty clearly that it's not something the company is considering right now. "Currently, we are not actively looking at free to play for our first-party content and I don’t think that’s a direction that we should go in right now," he said, though he later admits that there is "no intention to deny every possibility of free-to-play."

There's a lot of ground covered in the seven-page Q&A, with Iwata addressing many of the questions that industry observers have been asking in the wake of E3. If you're curious at all about the Wii U and Nintendo's bigger picture plans for it, the Q&A is definitely worth a closer look.

Nintendo's Friend Codes will continue to be a thing when the Wii U console launches later in 2012, but Nintendo of America bossman Reggie Fils-Aime insists that users will find the new system much easier to work with. While he wouldn't lay out any specific details for the new framework in his E3 2012 chat with Kotaku, he did confirm that the Wii U won't use "the existing friend code system."

"You will be able to identify people as friends and have a certain level of interaction vs. a different level of interaction for the more general population," he said. "The method by which you identify someone as a friend is a lot simpler than what's happening today with Friend Codes."

Official E3 Preview of Pikmin 3 »

Nintendo's E3 2012 confirmation of Pikmin 3 as a Wii U launch window title isn't all smiles and sunshine, as we now learn that the game won't include any kind of online multiplayer mode. Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto confirmed as much to IGN, explaining that technical limitations are the big sticking point in keeping the feature out of the upcoming game.

According you Miyamoto, the online multiplayer in Pikmin 3 is a sizable challenge because "you would have lots of individual, small creatures, the Pikmin, whose every movement and location is going to be really important in the game, it would be very difficult to sync up over an internet connection." I would argue back that gaming consoles can do some amazing things these days, but I would also be doing so with no real practical knowledge of game development to back my points up. Mostly, I just want online Pikmin.
