Resistance Burning Skies

Resistance: Burning Skies is arguably the most keenly anticipated Vita game to date. The big deal with Vita’s second analogue stick is a lot to do with the PSP wanting to showcase the kinds of game coming out on PS3, but struggling to with just one stick. In Burning Skies, the Vita has the ultimate test of that additional analogue stick: a first-person shooter.

But Burning Skies isn’t just about the Vita and FPS games. It’s also the fifth game in the nearly 6-years-old Resistance franchise. Sony’s PlayStation-exclusive series first burst on to our screens with Fall of Man, but now, one trilogy and millions sold worldwide later, the flame that developer Insomniac Games once held has not been passed on. Who will take it up next? Will anyone?

There’s a chance that Burning Skies will be the final game in what’s been one of the biggest PlayStation franchises of this generation. So if Burning Skies is the last we’ll see of the Chimera and their scary, scary teeth, it would seem high time that we paid some retrospective dues to a series that taught us just how much fun a grenade with spikes attached to it could be.

Here’s our game-by-game retrospective of the Resistance series.

Quantic Dream's Kara Performance Demo »

David Cage, the founder of Heavy Rain developer Quantic Dream, will be unveiling his studio's next game at Sony's E3 2012 press conference next Monday, June 4, a "trusted senior development source" tells CVG. The same source also revealed that the Paris-based game maker is working on two projects for Sony, though one or both may be aimed at a platform other than the PlayStation 3.

There's no word on what shape the mysterious E3 reveal game might take, but between QD's Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy, some sort of deeply interactive story-driven experience seems likely. Cage showcased the results of his more recent efforts in GDC 2012's "Kara" demo, prompting many to speculate that a new game reveal was imminent. This rumor certainly supports that. We'll find out soon enough, with less than a week to go before Sony trots out its upcoming lineup for E3-goers.

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes will feature an all-star cast of characters, yes I'm talking about the Justice League. When the Joker teams up with Lex Luther, the dark, and blocky, knight will have no choice but to call on his other masked friends to help. Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Green Lantern all made the cut.

LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes Gameplay Preview »

For the first time in LEGO history a LEGO game will feature voice acting. Previous installments relied on sighs and squeals to convey plot.

"The LEGO series takes it to the next level by treading into new and dangerous territory: voice acting.  While we didn’t hear any of the tender tones coming from the game this time, be assured that the man behind the mask will have a voice to go along with that mug of his. Developers swear that all of the humor that you loved from the previous game will still be there, only with voices now."

Sony's PlayStation Vita is the last of the announced platforms that will support Brian Provinciano's upcoming retro-styled open-world mash-up game Retro City Rampage, and a newly released video offers a peek at how the portable version stacks up. There's still no mention of a final release date, though we last heard that RCR would be coming sometime in May 2012, also known as this month.

The Vita version incorporates some touch-based controls as well as two viewing options, for playing the game in its original 16:9 widescreen format or in a scaled up version that is more suitable to the handheld's smaller screen. There's also a cross-platform save option for those who play RCR on their PlayStation 3 and Vita both. Retro City Rampage is also coming to Xbox Live, Wii, and PC, presumably in less than 10 days from now if previous plans for a May release remain in place.

Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time Now Confirmed For PS Vita

Sony kicks off this late-May 2012 Friday with the wonderful news that the PlayStation 3 version of Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time will be joined by a PlayStation Vita release as well. The Vita-based Sly game is to be a direct port of the console release, Sanzaru Games' Glen Egan confirms on PlayStation Blog.

In addition to carrying the core PS3 game over to a handheld platform, the Vita version of Thieves in Time will also include front/back touch features, motion controls, and cross-platform saving. Egan promises to bring out more details on the price and release date "soon." And hey, wouldn't you know it? E3 '12 is also happening quite "soon."

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock Gamepay Trailer »

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock finally has a release date. The action/platformer based on the hit BBC TV series has been kicking around for months with trailers and the like, but now we know when we'll be able to play it. And it's really soon!

The official Twitter feed for Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock confirms a worldwide PSN release on May 23, 2012. This just applies to the PlayStation 3 platform, however. A PlayStation Vita version will come to PSN a few weeks later, on June 13, in another global release. No reason is given for the platform delay. There's no date given for the PC release, though that one is still coming as well.

I think all Whovians can wholeheartedly agree that it's about bloody time. Why don't you take a peek at the trailer again to get yourself in the mood. The game's Trophy list is also now publicly available, though the more dedicated fans might pick up on a spoiler or two.

PS Vita

PlayStation Vita sales have hit 1.8 million worldwide, Sony has announced. They've also said that PS Vita software sales, both retail and digital, have passed the two million mark. To compare, the Nintendo 3DS sold 2.1 million copies from January to March 2012, but the Vita's only been out worldwide since the end of February.

Sony CEO Kaz Hirai addressed the sales figure optimistically, saying that for the Vita's starting phase, the handheld console's off to a good start. He did however stress the importance of software for the Vita, saying that it's likely to be the key to Vita's success in the long run, saying, "A game platform, like Vita – the software is the key to success, how good the software is."

Today brings your very first look at the upcoming fantasy action game Soul Sacrifice for the PlayStation Vita, in the form of an exceedingly brief 36-second teaser. The game was first outed in April 2012 by an ad in an issue of Famitsu; the initial vague hints that followed pegged it as a Monster Hunter-style adventure with co-op elements.

The trailer doesn't offer up much more, instead flashing through a series of action-packed fight scenes. On screen text points to May 10, 2012 -- also known as "this Thursday" -- as the date that all will be revealed. This falls in line with what we'd previously heard about Sony holding a May 10 press conference for the game at the Tokyo International Forum.

Japan Studio has a sweet little concept trailer to share with you for the upcoming PlayStation Vita game, Gravity Rush. Sony's done a pretty good job with the post-launch Vita library so far. The handheld hit U.S. shores running in February 2012 with a largely solid assortment of games, and we've a handful of others emerge since. Gravity Rush is one that those in the know have been looking out for though, and with good cause. It's an action game fueled by some beautiful animation.

The concept trailer shows off the early vision for Gravity Rush's gameplay. It really doesn't look a whole lot different from what we've seen in gameplay videos. The wait isn't too much longer anymore. Gravity Rush hits U.S. store shelves on June 12.

Persona 4: The Golden Confirmed For U.S. Release

Atlus is bringing Persona 4: The Golden to PlayStation Vita users in the U.S. as a fall 2012 release, the game's website confirms. The Vita port was revealed back in summer 2011 for a Japan release as an expanded version of the PlayStation 2 game with new features and story elements. The Japan version arrives on June 14, 2012, but this is the first confirmation we've gotten of a planned localization for U.S. audiences.

Interestingly, the trademark text at the bottom of the official website may also hint at plans for additional platforms. Xbox 360 and Kinect are both listed under the trademark info even though there are no logos on the page for the Microsoft products. As Kotaku rightly notes, this could just be some copy/pasted text that was incorrectly edited. Wouldn't you rather hope for a wider platform release though? We're reaching out to Atlus for an update, so stay tuned.
