Ruin -- The New Action RPG Coming to the PlayStation Vita

During the Sony E3 2011 Press Conference, Ruin, a new action RPG coming to the PlayStation Vita was announced. Ruin is a game that will test your reflexes. It looks somewhat similar to Diablo or Torchlight as it's a third person over head action RPG which will feature different classes. The game uses other players as rivals via Social Media tools. As your rivals grow in level, you'll visit their lair which will grow in difficulty.

You can use the PlayStation Vita's cloud saving functionality to flawlessly take your Ruin save from your Vita to the PlayStation 3 to continue your journey. Details surrounding Ruin are still pretty slim, but as we get more information during our extended E3 coverage we'll be sure to get them to you.

Meet the NGP: Tech, Specs and More

It wasn't exactly a well-kept secret, but Sony's new handheld is called the "PlayStation Vita." It was once code-named the Sony NGP, or "Next Generation Portable," but the company has decided the device will be called "The Vita."

Vita means "Life" in Latin, and was chosen, according to Sony, beacuse they feel the device "enables a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context. SCE is aiming to transform every aspect of user's daily life into an entertainment experience."

Along with the name, we learned that the Vita's internet provider will only be AT&T, and we learned the name of the device's connection suite. It will be called "Near."

E3 For Complete Noobs: Your Guide To All Things E3 2011

E3 2011 begins next week and if your view of E3 has been limited to the glare of a computer screen and the glossy pages of a print magazine, you’ve come to the right place. From the circus atmosphere of the show floor to the booze-flowing parties and long, long hours in line, we’re here to pull back the curtain and show you what it’s really like.

For those fans who are new to the whole game, E3 is THE trade show for the videogame industry. While PAX is for fans, and GDC is for developers themselves, E3 is for buyers and media – so publishers pull out all the stops to bring their A-game to the show floor and to the many media briefings throughout the week. Major game announcements and console/hardware launches are revealed, big games are shown in playable form for the first time, and trailers are cut just for the show. For three days in June, the Los Angeles Convention Center becomes a mecca for gaming – and the press flocks to cover it all.

For the most part, E3 can be broken down into the press events, the show floor, and the “extracurricular”, that is, the parties that keep the excitement going long after the convention center powers down for the evening. Read on to take a closer look at the wonder that is E3.

Silent Hill: Book Of Memories For Sony NGP Announced

Silent Hill Book of Memories, a Silent Hill game for the PlayStation NGP/PlayStation Vita was revealed during the company's pre-E3 presentation. Other than a look at the game's logo and a promise to take the series where it's never gone before, no information was given about Book of Memories, so we can't tell you when it's coming out, how you'll play it or anything else. Just know that it's out there. In the dark. Waiting for you.

As part of its pre-E3 2011 press conference, Konami has had Hideo Kojima introduce Transfarring, a "gaming lifetsyle" system for improving connectivity between the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and PlayStation NGP/Vita. By "Transfarring" a save file from a PS3 to PSP with compatible titles, players can take their saves with them and play on the go, continuing from exactly where they left off. The first title announced to utilize the feature is Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, which will be released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 2011. It will be released along with remastered versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater.

Kojima also explained that his plans for Transfarring don't end with the PlayStation Portable. Speaking to Mark MacDonald, Executive Director at 8-4, Ltd, Kojima said that file transfers for PSP-quality titles was only the first step in Konami's plans. The next step involves porting PlayStation 2-quality titles to PSP and PlaySation NGP/Vita, which either system is certainly capable of handling. We've already seen several titles crop up on both PS2 and PSP, including Konami's own Silent Hill: Origins. But wait, there's more! Read on to see the final phase.

Uncharted: Golden Abyss, an Uncharted game for the Sony NGP/PlayStation Vita, has just been revealed by Sony and Bend Studio. Details are a bit sparse as to the plot, but we know the game stars Uncharted hero Nathan Drake, and introduces a new character, Jason Dante too. According to the developers, it takes place before the events of the first Uncharted, but is not a prequel... I'm not sure how that's possible, but that's what they tell us.

According to Bend's creative director John Garvin, the NGP is the only handheld that could possibly handle an Uncharted game. "This is the first Uncharted game on a handheld device, because the NGP is first handheld that could do a game like Uncharted," Garvin told us. "We're doing rendering techniques that have only recently been done on the PS3 -- things like deferred shading and advanced real time lighting. we have something like 150 shaders on the characters and on the environments."

E3 2011: What We’re Looking Forward To

E3 2011 is a week away, and when the Expo is finished, the consumer narrative for the rest of 2011 will be laid out. We could predict much of that narrative already, as the list of games to be shown has been confirmed and widely discussed in the games press, but there are a few surprises we should discuss first, before focusing on what we already know. Check out the full list below, and then let us know what's starting to tickle your fancy about E3 this year.

Meet the NGP: Tech, Specs and More

The PlayStation Vita aka PlayStation NGP and PSP2, has a rumored launch lineup that includes the likes of Uncharted, Call of Duty and Mortal Kombat. The Vita launch titles sprung up on Memorial Day on the PSPGWeber website, though it should be noted that there are plenty of red flags to mark this as rumor. Interesting, worthy-of-following rumor to be sure, but rumor nonetheless.

For one, there are two titles in the list that include the annotation "NGP," Uncharted NGP and Lumines NGP. Now if Sony's new handheld is called Vita, why would these titles be listed with "NGP" in the title? One could argue codenames, except we just learned that the Uncharted NGP game will be called Uncharted: Golden Abyss. It just seems strange that Golden Abyss wouldn't be on the launch title list which leads us to question the rest of the entries. Plus, why would Lumines feel the need to hide behind those three letters?

Again, be sure to take the entire list with a grain of salt.  To see the whole thing click after the break and scrutinize/dream as you wish!

NGP

The PlayStation NGP (aka: The PlayStation PSP2) may have an official name, and that name just might be "Vita," if rumors around the Interwebs and a new developer site url are to be believed. The site is http://vita.scedev.net/, and though the NGP is not currently listed among platforms, it is nonetheless a working link, not a broken "server not found" url.

The rumor mill is spinning pretty rapidly on this, which isn't surprising - E3 is right around the corner, which is when the official Sony announcement is expected. The original leak from an anonymous source popped up on multiple sites over the weekend, and now there's a dev site url. It may not be entirely confirmed news, but at this point it's looking more than likely.

What do you think of (what is likely) the NGP's new name? Bonus points to anyone who knew that "vita" is Italian for "life"!

The Road to E3 2011: Sony Report Card

During an investor call in Japan late last night, Sony confirmed they are working on a "future platform." Although few hard details were revealed about the platofrm, this is the first official mention from Sony of these plans.

When discussing an increase in research and development costs over the last quarter, Sony’s VP and CFO Masaru Kato said:

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life, but this is a platform business, so for the future platform – when we’ll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that – but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there.”

Kato said whatever Sony is working on will have a different kind of launch than the PS3. The losses they have suffered on the PlayStation 3 had to do with the price of semiconductors versus retail prices. Sony has since created its own semiconductor facilities, and this mean it is "no longer thinkable to have a huge initial financial investment like that of the PS3," according to Kato.
