Mortal Kombat: Ed Boon Tells Us The Story Behind The Game

It was confirmed earlier this week that last year's Mortal Kombat game from Netherrealm Studios is headed to the PlayStation Vita as well. A lot of fighting games seem to be springing up (or have already sprung up) for Sony's new handheld, so an MK port fits right in. The game will apparently be taking advantage of some of the Vita's unique features as well, as creative director and series co-creator Ed Boon reveals in a new Q&A posted on PlayStation Blog.

While the Vita version of Mortal Kombat won't use any of the device's rear touchpad features, Netherrealm is taking advantage of the front-facing touchscreen. "For example, you can touch your X-ray meter to execute an X-ray attack," Boon said. "For fatalities, you can 'slash' the screen with the appropriate inputs — say, away, away, up — to execute the fatality."

PS Vita

I'm sure that some of you will look at today's news of yet another sales dip for Sony's PlayStation Vita in Japan as a harbinger of doom for the young handheld, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. First, the facts...

Weekly hardware sales figures put the Vita at number four on the Japanese charts with 18,361 sold, which leaves it trailer behind its predecessor, the PlayStation Portable, with 22,538 units sold. The figures come from Media Create, via Andriasang.

PlayStation Vita To Launch With Flickr App

Sony intends for the PlayStation Vita to be used as more than just a gaming platform. Like the PlayStation Portable and PSP Go before it, the Vita is a portable media player. As a web-connected, 3G-capable machine, it's also going to integrate a range of social features. At least one more of those apps will now be available by the time the Vita launches in the U.S.: Flickr.

An English language-only Flickr app is now available in the Vita's PlayStation Store, Andriasang confirms. Photos snapped with the handheld's cameras can be uploaded to the photo sharing website and comments can be posted. Note that a Flickr account will be required to use the app. Still to come are apps for Foursquare, Facebook and Skype, but there's no word yet on when they'll be released.

Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock Game Gets First Screenshot

Later this year, Doctor Who fans will get step into the shoes of their favorite Timelord when Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock comes to PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Very little has been revealed about the game so far, though it IS confirmed that players will be controlling both the good Doctor and River Song.

So far, we've only had the trailer and a brief announcement to go on. That changes today, with the posting of the game's first screenshot on the official Doctor Who Facebook page. There's still not much to be gathered about the story, though at least fans now know that they'll be running into Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor in The Eternity Clock.

Mortal Kombat Coming To The PlayStation Vita

Mortal Kombat is coming to the PlayStation Vita handheld in Spring 2012, NetherRealm Studios has announced. The new version of the over-the-top fighter has been designed specifically for on-the-go gaming and will introduce brand new gameplay features and contend developed exclusively for the Vita.

“The NetherRealm team is committed to making sure that we follow up the success of 2011’s Mortal Kombat with an equally compelling experience on the PlayStation Vita,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director, NetherRealm Studios. “The original game content and new features we developed for the PlayStation Vita will provide gamers with the best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform.”

Everything hasn't been revealed about the title yet, but we do know that it will include tag team, Challenge Tower, and a deep story mode. You'll also be able to play as Kratos from the God of War series in the PS Vita version too.

Now that Mortal Kombat has been confirmed for a Vita release does that make you more or less interested in picking up the handheld console?

PlayStation Vita Online Modes Revealed: Near, Party, LiveArea, and Activity -- Will This Revolutionize Portable Gaming?

The PlayStation Vita won't be out here in the United States until February 22, but it arrived in Japan and China late last year and Sony has so far been right on top of supporting the hardware. A firmware update shortly after the Vita's launch brought the device's OS up to version 1.51. implementing a number of small bug fixes. Now, Andriasang reports (and I can confirm from my own import system) that FW v1.52 is now available.

Sony hasn't revealed exactly what changes the update brings, but Andriasang suggests that it's another "small bug fix." The site also notes that some Vita owners are saying "via Twitter ad blogs and so-forth" that the update addresses an issue where "the 3G system would not recognize your SIM card." Whatever the case is, I can tell you this: updating the Vita is a snap thanks to touchscreen controls that let you quickly scroll down to the end of the EULA.

No one actually reads those things, right?

Touch My Katamari "Prologue" Story Video »

I've been sitting here staring blankly at my screen for 10 minutes now, trying to think of an entertaining way to tell you about the newly released intro video for the PlayStation Vita launch title, Touch My Katamari. The problem, I think, is that the act of watching the video so that I could write about it blew a fuse somewhere upstairs in my brain.

Fortunately, the video handles itself just fine. For those who are familiar with the Katamari series, this video is more of the same. And for those who don't... well... just know that there are support groups to help you deal with the sights and sounds that you're about to see.

Just remember one thing: the above video is how the February 22 Vita release starts.

Unit 13

One of the PlayStation Vita launch window titles that I'm most excited about is Unit 13, a third-person modern warfare shooter from SOCOM dev Zipper Interactive. The game is very on-the-go-play friendly, serving up a large number of bite-sized missions that you can play through multiple times to level up the game's various soldier classes. You can get a better sense of how it all works in our Unit 13 hands-on preview from last month.

The game had originally been revealed as a launch window title, and it was clear to me when I saw the game in December that it would be very close to the Vita's February 22 launch, based on how content-complete it seemed to be. Turns out that it's REALLY close. Like 'two weeks later' close. Sony confirmed at CES this week that Unit 13 will arrive on March 6, a Twitter update from @PlayStation reveals.

So go ahead, mark your calendar and put aside a little more of that hard-earned cash as another hot-looking Vita launch lineup game firms up.

Our intrepid reporter Jessica Chobot is extremely dedicated to her job. We sent her to CES 2012 with one mission: to help us showcase the latest and greatest gadgets the tech industry has to offer. So far, she's done a bang-up job, and in this segment, Jessica takes a look at the new android phone the RAZR MAXX, the Samsung Super OLED HDTV, and an LG refridgerator that has a blast chiller that will cool down a warm soda in only five minutes.

Jessica also gets her hands on the PlayStation Vita, Sony's new handheld console due out in February. She and Sony's portable devices have a torrid past. Will Jessica's love affair continue with the Vita? Watch the video to find out!

PS Vita

The PS Vita, Sony's latest handheld, isn't available in the US yet but we know you want our PlayStation Vita impressions, so PS Vita impressions you shall get. I have an imported PlayStation Vita sitting right next to me as I write this. It came as part of a "Value Pack" that included Uncharted: Golden Abyss and a set of official Sony accessories. We're not going to talk about how much it cost, but this is, for all intents and purposes, the very same handheld gaming device that United States customers will be able to buy as of February 22.

I should note as well that this wasn't something Sony sent over. My brief preview sitdowns with the Vita were more than enough to convince me that it would have to be mine. So I set out to wrap my hot little hands around an imported unit, and at considerable personal expense. So here's my unfiltered opinion of the PlayStation Vita. Not a review, but rather a hands-on look at one consumer's initial exploration of the new hardware.

Netflix CEO Says Likelihood Of Nintendo Support Is

Sony have announced that a Netflix app will be coming to the PlayStation Vita handheld console. The announcement didn't come with too many details, but according to the company they're trying to get the Netflix app ready for when the Vita launches on February 22.  It's a pretty smart decision, as the PlayStation Vita is equipped with a gorgeous 5-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 960×544, at around 220ppi, and movies will probably look great on it. What's still up in the air is though whether or not the Netflix app will be limited to WiFi or if it will be supported over 3G, but considering the high price of the Vita data plans it will be interesting to see which route they take.

PlayStation Vita Online Modes Revealed: Near, Party, LiveArea, and Activity -- Will This Revolutionize Portable Gaming?

The circus is in full swing at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, giving Sony the opportunity to stand on its solid gold soapbox and shout about the PlayStation Vita's sales numbers. Sony head of consumer products Kaz Hirai confirmed during yesterday's media briefing that the the newly released handheld, which launched in Japan on December 17, has sold more than 500,000 units as of January 5 (via Gamasutra).

That's SOLD and not SOLD THROUGH. In other words, actual consumer money has been exchanged for product more than 500,000 times. Some have been quick to point to the Vita's less-than-stellar post-launch sales reports as a sign of failure, but it appears to be picking up. The late-December Hong Kong and Taiwan releases certainly helped. There's also still the rest of the world to think about, since it won't be shipping outside of the initial launch territories until February.

The Vita comes to the U.S. on February 22, with the price set at $250 for the wi-fi model and $300 for the 3G one.
