Riddick: Debut Trailer Deals Death In The Dark

Riddick, the long-awaited third entry in the film series started with Pitch Black has released its debut trailer showing that Vin Diesel's titular titan has not lost a single eye-shining step.

Certainly, as far as trailers go, this one could hardly be classified as a "teaser." In fact, if there was ever a movie trailer that contradicted the old adage "less is more," then this one just might fit the bill. Coming to the web via Machinima, this sin-slaying spot clocking in at 2:31 pretty much lays the groundwork for not just the plot, but seemingly everything that happens in the film...in their likely chronological order. Indeed, this is one transparent trailer that has one goal in mind: Showing you the unadulterated, unapologetic, ass-kicking action that you've come to expect from the Riddick series. -- And, yeah, it delivers.

With Riddick stuck on yet another alien planet with unforgivable elements while being chased by bloodthirsty bounty hunters, one might think that it's business as usual. Well, as the extremely-exposé-friendly footage reveals, the real threat of this film isn't coming from the hubris-heavy headhunters, but from the planet's asinine indigenous creatures who really don't give two craps about who's right or wrong in this space drama. Thusly, Diesel's Riddick must now join forces with the group, who just minutes earlier were looking to put his severed head in a box for bounty when they are overrun by the not-so-friendly fauna. Amongst the group are Battlestar Galactica's Katee Sackhoff and former WWE wrestler and future Guardians of the Galaxy Drax, Dave Bautista.

Fans may notice this film being smaller in scale than the over-the-top grandiosity displayed in the last film, 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick. Well, that tends to happen when a franchise's previous entry gets a packed $105 million budget and barely makes enough to pay it back. This time, the franchise's regular director, David Twohy, working off a significantly reduced budget of $38 million, has crafted a more insular and suspenseful film, which certainly hearkens back to 2000's original unlikely franchise kickoff with Pitch Black.

Riddick goes hillbilly handfishin' in the sand for dragons when it hits theaters on September 6. Check out the debut trailer below!
