The Wolverine has revealed yet another one of the baneful beauties that will grace the summer solo return of Hugh Jackman's titular mutant mauler. This time, the sneak peak is of ravishing Russian actress, Svetlana Khodchenkova, who will play the character of Viper. -- Additionally, it appears that fans anxiously awaiting the film's long-delayed trailer may have a date to mark.
Over the weekend, director, James Mangold tweeted this sneak peak black and white portrait, just as he did for the two female leads of the film. However, unlike the roles of those two, the context of Viper's inclusion in the film is actually still somewhat cloudy. While The Wolverine is based on the 1982 Wolverine miniseries by Frank Miller, the inclusion of Viper and Will Yun Lee's The Silver Samurai (who in the comics is known to be her bodyguard and presumed lover,) seems to indicate that the film may also touch on events that took place in the miniseries' aftermath in subsequent issues of The Uncanny X-Men in 1983.
In the comic canon, Viper is the sinister, subversive seductress who rose through the ranks of criminal empire, HYDRA to become its leader, Madame Hydra. Of course, HYDRA only exists in Marvel Studios' movieverse and not this one by Fox, so that aspect will likely be left out. However, what's usable here is her connection to Wolverine, which stretches far into the past, back in the 1920's. They both studied under the shared mentor, Seraph, who just before her death, made Wolverine swear an oath of loyalty to Viper. Of course, Viper was no angel and even managed to slow her aging in a sinister deal with a mystical demon. (An aspect that probably won't be used in the film.) She eventually turns her various schemes towards Wolverine, including using his code of honor to blackmail him into a bizarre marriage. (As if this movie didn't already have romantic chaos for Logan.)
This all sounds juicy and awesome, but what about that TRAILER which should have come down the pike months ago? Well, according to Mangold, he will tweet a teaser for the trailer (or "tweazer" as he's calling it) on the 26th of this month. However, on the following day, Wednesday, March 27...yes, in the year, 2013, THE FULL TEASER TRAILER WILL BE RELEASED ONLINE!!! Plus, the spot will also hit the big screen in 3D and 2D on March 29 with the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
