Nintendo is calling 2013 the Year of Luigi, with a number of games lined up that star or feature the green-clad Mario brother. Company boss Satoru Iwata revealed the facts in this morning's installment of Nintendo Direct, speaking a bit on Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon before turning to a lineup of previously unannounced games.
On the 3DS side, two titles are pegged for summer 2013: Mario Golf: World Tour and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. The former is the work of Mario Golf developer Camelot and it seems to be pretty much what you'd expect. Luigi is joined in the game by Mario, Wario, Waluigi, Bowser, Donkey Kong, and likely others. In one course seen during the demonstration, pint-sized golfers compete in a garden that features a giant Goomba.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team is the latest installment in the Mario & Luigi RPG series. The story unfolds around a dream that Luigi is stuck inside of, with puzzles to be solved by using the 3DS touchscreen to mess with the sleeping plumber's face. It looks like the game features a mixture of 2D and 3D environments. It also adds some new abilities, such as summoning a full-on swarm of Luigis.
Over on the Wii U, Nintendo is working on an extensive DLC release for New Super Mario Bros. U that completely reworks the game's 80+ levels for an all-new adventure starring Luigi, called New Super Luigi U. Iwata describes it as "large-scale downloadable content which is similar to the development of full software," though he promises that you can expect to see it later this year.
