The second trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness, which premiered this past weekend with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has made its online debut.
A few weeks after hazy hints from the first teaser trailer made us scratch our heads even more about the identity of the film's irascible enemy played by Benedict Cumberbatch, we're given a trailer that's seemingly more about the evolution of Chris Pine's Captain James T. Kirk.
Could the carnage caused by Cumberbatch's malevolent misanthrope, currently being referred to as "John Harrison," be the result of a cocky young captain's complacency? Check out the trailer below!
Whether he's Khan, Gary Mitchell, or just some random angry dude that's related to the quiet Beatle, Cumberbatch's baddie is clearly a man who has experienced some horrific life-altering events and has gained the super-powers to go with them.
The trailer may not have given us any game-changing moments, but it set an important new theme into context: Kirk's arrogance.
It appears that since the last film, Jim has settled into the captain's chair comfortably...perhaps too comfortably. (Which tends to happen when you jump rank from "washed-out cadet" to "captain of the Federation's flagship" in just a few minutes.)
We could take this as an overall theme of the film and Kirk's character arc, or as another clue about where this "John Harrison" character fits in the grand scheme of the Star Trek canon.
Star Trek Into Darkness, readies a Red Shirt body count at theaters on May 17, 2013.
