The debut trailer for next summer's sci-fi survival epic, After Earth has arrived with a planet full of pushy primates and dreadful dinosaurs who aren't so keen on welcoming a pair of the human species back to Earth. -- Even if that pair happen to be Will Smith and his son, Jaden.
While serving as a father-son vehicle for the Smiths, it also marks the directorial return of the notoriously-twist-happy taskman, M. Night Shyamalan. Having tried his hand (unsuccessfully) at big-budget popcorn fare with the live-action anime adaptation, The Last Airbender back in 2010, Shyamalan takes us to a genre-jumbled mashup of space sci-fi and Jurassic Park.
Will it work? Acknowledge that fear is a choice and check out the trailer below.
The film takes place in a far future after an unfathomable disaster forces mankind to evacuate Earth forever and take up residence on a new planet called Nova Prime. A thousand years later, Earth would meet humanity again by way of a famous father-son duo.
We meet military hero, General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) who, after many years of service, was finally ready to hang up his futuristic laser rifle to return home with his 13 year-old son, Kitai (Jaden Smith) and be a father to him. Unfortunately, their pilot's skills with old-school Atari games may have been rusty as a stray asteroid hits their ship, forcing them to crash land on humanity's former home.
However, instead of a "welcome home" party by Pixar-esque talking animals with cute grins, they find a world overrun by an array of giant, seemingly primeval species who are generally unpleasant to be around to anything they consider food. (Which is probably everything.)
While Will Smith is clearly the marquee name for this film, the events in the trailer do seem to suggest that Jaden's character ends up becoming more central. -- He'll need all the martial arts skills he learned from Jackie Chan in The Karate Kid to survive Earth's worst case of real estate depreciation ever.
After Earth crash lands at theaters on June 7, 2013.
