What You Need To Know

  • The Sony Internet Player with Google TV is an Internet companion for your TV by connecting to your current cable or satellite box and enabling Google Search for your live TV and web content.
  • The design is very simple and the back features the HDMI in and out, as well as Ethernet and optical audio out.
  • The set-up was very fast but it was very simple: the software did a really good job of recognizing the satellite box, TV and receiver.
  • The remote has a full QWERTY keyboard and trackpad, which we liked using.
  • We had a lot of issues with the Google TV interface, which still feels very green.
  • The keyboard makes a lot of sense but it certainly wasn't perfect.
  • You can do voice commands but only if you have a compatible Sony phone.
  • This device is supposed to make your live TV service smarter, and the movies/TV search app is pretty great.
  • It aggregates everything that is on TV right now into a Netflix Instant style interface.
  • This works great if you subscribe to any premium cable channels.
  • You can also search for any movie and it'll tell when it's playing and where it's available on demand.
  • Sony Internet Player does a pretty bad job of interfacing with the actual cable box.
  • For example, you still have to navigate your cable box to record a show.
  • Dish Network boxes are the only ones that fully talk to Google TV.
  • Google needs to work on a seamless integration with cable boxes.
  • The player is also supposed to connect to services like Netflix, Amazon and HBO Go but right now, there's only a Netflix app.
  • The other app icons for Amazon and HBO Go open the webpages for those services so you have to use a cursor to navigate the content.
  • This makes no sense when there are great apps for Amazon on the Xbox and PlayStation 3.
  • Essentially, these app icons are just hyperlinks.

Price

  •  $170

Rating

  • 2.5 Seals of Approval out of 5. (How do we rate gadgets?)
  • This device still has a lot of potential.
  • Most cable boxes are outright awful and the fact that Google is trying to make that experience better is a good thing.
  • That said, there's a lot of work that needs to be done.
  • Sony made some good hardware with the cool remote but having killer apps is that's going to really get this thing where it needs to be.
