Star Trek Into Darkness: Debut Trailer Hits With Vengeance

The long-awaited debut trailer for sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness has hit the status quo of the future with an explosive, albeit eloquently-spoken fury that could rip Starfleet to its very core.

Clocking in at little over a minute, the brief teaser is a colossal cavalcade of crushing carnage mixed with shots of shocked faces.

We also get a peek into the mindset of the extremely irate villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch who wants to make it perfectly clear that our world is anything but safe once he brings his one man tour de force of demolition to a futuristic town near you.

Check it out below, as well as a (slightly) extended Japanese version which may have given us a critical clue.

In spite of all this epic footage showing the struggles that await the crew of the Enterprise, and, apparently all of Earth, we still don't know the identity of our antagonist.

At this point, the previously dominant theory surrounding the identity of Benedict Cumberbatch's villain role being super-powered former Starfleet officer, Gary Mitchell is starting to crumble a bit based on what we're seeing and hearing.

Theories are starting to revert back to earlier speculation which had Cumberbatch pegged as the genetically-enhanced 20th century superman, Khan Noonien Singh, this time played as a sophisticated Englishman, rather than the suave, passive-aggressive, ethnically-Indian original played by Ricardo Montalban.

Also supplementing the Khan theory is one of the extra scenes in the Japanese trailer which seems to reproduce an unforgettable moment from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in which Spock sacrifices his life to save the ship. While it's doubtful he'll need to go that far this time around, the imagery does speak for itself.

Of course, for all we know, director, J.J. Abrams may have these multiple red herrings out there to distract us from the easy explanation that this could be a completely original villain.

Star Trek Into Darkness gives us comforting lies told to protect us at theaters on May 17, 2013.
