X-Men: Days Of Future Past Get Ian McKellen And Patrick Stewart

It appears that X-Men: Days of Future Past, the upcoming sequel to last year's X-Men: First Class, will be adding some familiar faces to the "sort-of rebooted" franchise.

It is being reported that Ian McKellen will return to don his helmet and cause metallic carnage as Magneto and that Patrick Stewart will also get ready to polish his wheelchair and practice his "mind-reading face" before once again becoming Professor Charles Xavier.

Some moviegoers may be scratching their heads at this revelation since those characters were portrayed by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy respectively in First Class. However, the time-traveling aspects of the famous "Days of Future Past" comic book storyline on which the film will be based has created a unique opening allowing the film to give us the best of both worlds. (*Not a Star Trek: The Next Generation reference.)

What could be in store for fans of all things mutant?

With visionary of the first two X-films, Bryan Singer returning to the director's chair replacing Matthew Vaughn (who remains on the film credited as a producer,) it appears that we are in for an unprecedented collision of franchise versions, more possible returning cast members, as well as some blindingly-badass action.

The 1960's-set First Class showed us the beginning of the story where a friendship between Magneto and Xavier ended up fractured, creating the "good mutants vs. bad mutants" dynamic we all know. However, we may be set for a huge event in Days of Future Past in which the X-Men teams of First Class and the first X-Men trilogy could somehow come together to battle the mechanical mutant-hunting Sentinels for an event that could have temporal ramifications.

In fact, it could be the case that the events in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand (notably, Xavier's death) might, much like the original timeline in Star Trek, be undone. -- Wouldn't that be a shame? (And by "shame," I mean "miracle.")

For now, X-Men: Days of Future Past remains penciled-in to hit theaters with a Fastball Special on July 18, 2014.
