New Super Mario Bros. U is one of the surefire top-sellers that will be available when the Wii U launches on November 18, 2012, and Nintendo has some more details to share on what you can expect to find in the game beyond the expected side-scrolling platform action. Longtime fans will be pleased to learn the the game's world map returns to the same side-scrolling style that hasn't been seen in a Mario game since Super Mario World for the SNES.
While you're wandering around the map you might also encounter Nabbit, a new, randomly appearing character that can be access like any other level. The goal in Nabbit stages is to catch the fast-moving creature; do so and you'll receive a P-Acorn power-up -- it's the only way you can get one, in fact -- which allows for unlimited flight through an entire stage.
Then there's Challenge Mode, an objective-based variant on New Super Mario Bros. U's platforming that breaks into four categories: Time Attack, Coin Collection, 1-Up Rally, and Special (described as "miscellaneous challenges"). All of these challenges are built for two players, with one on the Wii U GamePad and the other wielding a Wii Remote.
Finally there's Coin Battle, a multiplayer mode for up to five players. This one is prety straightforward: everyone is competing to snatch up the most coins. The GamePad can be used in Boost Mode to place Boost Blocks and it can also be use as a level editor for Coin Battle maps.
