Microsoft's Major Nelson confirms that the latest Xbox 360 dashboard update rolls out to users today, October 23, 2012, just shy of the October 26 launch of Windows 8 and Xbox SmartGlass. Revealed at E3 2012, SmartGlass is Microsoft's move to offer second-screen functionality on your Xbox 360 console. In addition to basic menu navigation and the ability to control the new dashboard's Internet Explorer web browser, SmartGlass also aims to add value to the gaming and apps experience.
It sounds like the new feature will be pretty light at first, though support for a handful of items should be added "in the coming months." Forza Horizon, Dance Central 3, Home Run Stars, and the upcoming Signal Studios action game Ascend are all pegged for SmartGlass support, as is Halo community app Halo Waypoint. Karaoke, Kinect Sesame Street TV, and Prima Games are also listed under the "games" heading. Big-ticket sports apps ESPN, NBA Game Time, and UFC are all pegged for SmartGlass features, along with entertainment and news apps like Xbox Music, Xbox Video, HBO Go, MSN, NBC News, and, for a few weeks at least, Elections 2012.
All of this functionality will unlock on the smartphone/tablet and Windows 8 PC side via a free app download. Stay tuned for more details soon.
