Zaxxon returns! The BEST COIN-OP ARCADE GAME is being given a new lease on life by Sega in Zaxxon Escape, an upcoming mobile title that should be arriving soon for iOS and Android platforms. This revised take on the isometric space shooter appears to be inspired a bit by StarFox 64, which isn't a terrible thing at all. Just so long as the original arcade version is available as well (or at least unlockable).
Sega's announcement blog post doesn't reveal much, but it offers a nice trip down memory lane with photos of a couple of Zaxxon coin-ops and a shot of the tie-in board game (YES!). The release plans don't get any more specific than "soon" at the moment, but the turnaround time for many mobile games from announcement to release is generally short. I'll be surprised if Zaxxon Escape doesn't turn up at some point during the holiday 2012 season. Surprised and saddened.
