Earth Defense Forces 4 is coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, a Famitsu preview confirms (via Polygon). D3 Publisher has the market cornered when it comes to over-the-top action games built around destroying giant alien bugs and robots and robot bugs with a varied assortment of weapons and vehicles, and it's all thanks to the EDF series.
The game was previously revealed in name only by a teaser site back in July 2012, but the Famitsu preview confirms both the 2013 release window and target platforms. The preview also confirmed the return of online play as well as early looks at the game's new Ravager enemies and the Wing Diver, a player class that sounds like an evolution of Insect Armageddon's Jet Armor.
EDF 4 is also notable for bringing the original game's developer, Sandlot, back into the mix. The story picks up after the events of EDF 2017, which could mean that it ignores the added developments from 2011's EDF: Insect Armageddon.
The EDF 4 story opens in 2025, with mankind using the technology of the Ravager invaders to help rebuild. Unfortunately, some of those pesky space bugs burrowed deep into the Earth, where they bided their time and got busy restoring their forces. In the new game, they'll resurface and wreak havoc on Earth's population, though probably not as much havoc as you'll cause as you use explosives to blow them up.
EDF 4 is roughly halfway finished, according to the Famitsu piece. With TGS 2012 less than a week away, we'll hopefully hear more about it soon.
