Microsoft has a patent filed for a revolutionary display technology referred to as an "environment display" that projects a 360-degree view of a game world across an entire room, Patently Apple confirms (via CVG). The device would also be fitted with a 3D depth camera that keeps tracks of the player's movements in front of it using an enhanced version of the same basic techniques that the current-gen Kinect does.
The patent also suggests that this planned technology would work in tandem with Microsoft's supposedly planned shutter 3D glasses, which we first got wind of in a Microsoft design document that leaked in June 2012. It's not quite the Holodeck of Star Trek: The Next Generation's distant future, but the patented tech seems to aim for a similarly immersive sort of experience.
