Ubisoft confirms that its upcoming swords & sandals fighter from Kung Fu Factory, Spartacus Legends (based on the Starz TV serues), will be a free-to-play title when it comes to PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in early 2013. It's not the first F2P game announced for Xbox 360 -- that distinction belongs to Happy Wars -- but it's an indication at least that Microsoft is embracing this new free-to-play initiative. F2P is old news on the PS3, but another one never hurts.

The press release promises lots of progression-based content, including weapon and gear customization as well as actual "manager like" gladiator training in which you get to build a stable of fighters that pulls from eight different fighting styles. Players will face weekly challenges or fight on their own time in both online and local multiplayer. Since this is a F2P title, there will also be an in-game store where you'll presumably be able to buy weapons, gear, and/or cosmetic enhancements.
