Ubisoft is bringing the Call of Juarez back to its Wild West roots for the newly announced Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, a digital distribution release headed to Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC platforms in early 2013. The game puts players in the cowboy boots of a bounty hunter on a hunt for the period's most notorious outlaws, guys like Billy the Kid, Jesse James, and Butch Cassidy.
What's not clear from the press release is what kind of game we're looking at here. You'll take "a journey made of all out gun battles" as you "develop and acquire new abilities to become the West's finest gunslinger." That could certainly be describing another first-person shooter, but Gunslinger could also easily be a Wild West shootout game in the vein of Mad Dog McCree.

In any event, few will argue against the idea that the series needed a refresh after 2011's modern-day The Cartel. With its neat focus on mixing fantasy gameplay with a hunt for real-life anti-heroes, Gunslinger could be just the kick that Call of Juarez needed.
