Gearbox has announced Aliens: Colonial Marines will feature female marines. Female marines won't just be an added skin for multiplayer either. Gearbox has introduced Jennifer Redding as a co-op partner for story mode too. The announcement was made at PAX Prime 2012 and was met by applause...by me...from my bed at home when I read about it.
Originally, Gerarbox did not intend to have female playable characters. Producer Brian Burleson said in an interview, Aliens: Colonial Marines would not have any playable female marines. Choosing to exclude female heroes from a series which was built on strong female characters (Ripley, duh!) seemed odd.
To counter this decision an online petition was started, urging people to add their names to convince Gearbox to change their minds. Gamers, your online petition worked!
"We realized some people were starting to feel bad. We exist to entertain people," said Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford.
Jennifer Redding's character has been in the works for a while but Gearbox chose to remain quiet until the character art was locked down. Female marines in multiplayer will be customizable too.
"I want everybody to be clear that there are playable females in both the multiplayer and the campaign," Pitchford added.
Personally, I love playing as a female. I love customizing my character to have green eyes and brown hair. When I play games, I play to be the hero. It's a hell of a lot easier to feel like the hero when I'm playing someone who looks like me. I respect that Gearbox listened to their fans.
Are you glad gamers can play as a female in Aliens: Colonial Marines?
