Techland's 2011 sleeper Dead Island charmed lovers of open world action with its first-person take on melee-based zombie smashing, and now the German studio is aiming to turn one fan's popular weapon mod into a game of its own. Codenamed Project Hell, the in-development prototype is described on its newly launched sharpenyouraxes.com website as a "hack and slash game in a dark fantasy setting."
Modder MZM made such an impression on the Techland team that the studio assigned a small crew to work with him on developing a full-blown prototype. The eventual goal is to transform the basic idea of "chopping monsters frozen by magic spells using two-handed swords" into a full-blown game using Dead Island's engine. This is probably something that most fans of the 2011 game can get behind.
There's not a whole lot more to reveal just yet at such an early point in Project Hell's development. The team has shared two screens so far (find the second after the jump). There's also a pledge that Techland won't be turning to Kickstarter. What do you think of all this? Are you game for dark fantasy, Dead Island-style?
