PopCap has been hit with layoffs and a possible studio closure. Rumors of layoffs began circulating around gaming blogs but since then PopCap's directer of editorial and social media, Jeff Green, confirmed the news via Twitter. It is reported that 50 employees from the main Seattle office have been affected.
PopCap's studio in Dublin, Ireland may have been shut down according to 3D Realms co-creator George Broussard's Twitter account. His tweet also states the Shanghai studio was also hit with layoffs.
The creators of Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies was acquired by EA a year ago for $750 million. At first it seemed as though PopCap would be allowed to have creative control over their quirky projects. Last month we heard a rumor indicating EA had set up a PopCap team at Burnaby to work on a multiplayer shooter based on the Plants vs. Zombie IP. That doesn't sound like something quirky PopCap would work on willingly.
Our best wishes go out to those affected by the layoffs. We know they'll find a rad place to work soon!
