Nerdsourcing: Planetary Annihilation, Numenera And More

Posted August 20, 2012 - By Alex Rubens

Nerdsourcing finds you the best crowd sourcing projects from Kickstater, Indiegogo, and other such sites and brings them straight to your wallet. Give, help spread the word, or just find out what’s going to be the hot new thing in the future; nerdsourcing is there to help support the dreamers out there looking to make the impossible a reality, or those looking for the next big thing an edge on the competition. Time is limited to fund these projects, so don’t wait too long.

Planetary Annihilation

Planetary Annihilation is an RTS from the guys at Uber Entertainment (Super Monday Night Combat) that focuses on total destruction on a planetary scale. It isn’t your average RTS; it’s cranked up to 11. In the video, they say “We are not shooting for realism, we are shooting for awesome” and that’s exactly what they’ve done.

They made a ‘gameplay visualization’ trailer that shows their vision for the game, it isn’t actual gameplay (that’s what the Kickstarter campaign is needed for), but it’s a glorious vision of the destruction that you’ll be able to cause if the project is funded. If you’ve put any time into Super Monday Night Combat, you know that these guys can make some extremely cool stuff. With a uber-high goal of $900,000, that seems like it might be a long shot, but they’re only days into the campaign and it’s already most of the way there.

Reward: For a $20 pledge, you’ll receive a finished version of the game when it’s completed next year.

Numenera is a science fantasy RPG set one billion years in the future. They aren’t extremely advanced though, as civilizations have fallen and new ones have risen. It’s a constant back and forth, with Earth’s current inhabitants living at a Medieval level of technology. They’re surrounded by the remnants of past society, so there’s still satellites orbiting the planet constantly reminding them of what once was.

Players will choose a class at the beginning of the game, they can choose between Glaves, Jacks, and Nanos. They’ll then choose between many different characteristics that define the character. Finally, you choose a focus. The focus is what sets your character apart from other player characters, you could choose to become the master of a certain weapon or an element, like magnetism.

Reward: $20 will net you a PDF of the Numenera corebook and Player’s Guide, as well as the character creator app.

Perils of the Surface World

From the creator of Hollow Earth Expedition, comes a book filled with roleplaying scenarios that span the globe and bring players four different scenarios to play their way through. You’ll battle Nazis in the tropical jungles of Brazil, unravel mysteries in the catacombs beneath Venice, unearth monsters in the frigid wastes of Antarctica, and contend with martial arts masters in the back alleys of Shanghai.

These guys know what they’re doing too, as their last set of adventure books was nominated for an Emmy. That’s a pretty prestigious honor. The best part of this Kickstarter campaign is that if enough funding is raised, that set of ebooks will be printed in physical copy. The goal is extremely low for something of this quality too, but there are plenty of stretch goals in case they receive extra funding; that’s pretty cool.

Reward: For $10, you’ll your name included in the credits and a PDF copy of the Perils of the Surface World.

Mercenary Kings

Mercenary Kings is a 2D action game from the team behind Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game from XBLA. They’re in love with 2D pixel art graphics and that comes through in their beautiful art style. Mercenary Kings will also have four-player local cooperative play on PC, but if they earn enough, they’ll add multiplayer on more platforms and online play. It reminds us of the days when you’d sit down with friends and power through missions with your buddies.

Mercenary Kings
features beautiful 2D pixel art characters and animations, all in the art style of Paul Robertson. It’s extremely reminiscent of the old Metal Slug arcade games, but it needs your help to progress any further. Tribute Games will still make Mercenary Kings if the Kickstarter fails, but they wanted to open it up to be on as many platforms as possible (PC, Mac, Linux, XBLA, and iOS), rather than locking it down to one during a publishing deal.

Reward: You will receive a digital copy of Mercenary Kings AND a digital copy of Tribute Games’ previous title Wizorb for a pledge at the $15 level.
