Analysis: NPD April 2009 Console Sales - Nintendo DSi And Sony PlayStation 2 Flourish

The bad times continue to roll for the video game industry. According to the industry analysts at the NPD Group, In July, retail software sales fell 20 percent to $548.4 million. Last year in July, sales were at $686.3 million. Hardware sales were down even more -- 32 percent over last year's numbers.

Nintendo's handhelds were a spot of light in this dark environment. Both the DS and the 3DS sold more this year than last. The sales of every other platform declined. Microsoft sold the most home consoles; 203,000 Xbox 360s were sold in July.

Some of the drop in sales was the result of more people downloading games than buying physical copies, but it's not like things evened out.

“In the second quarter of this year, sales of content in a digital format have grown 17 percent over Q2 2011,” said Anita Frazier from NPD. “While this growth is in stark contrast to the declines in new physical software and hardware sales, the size of digital sales is not quite large enough to offset these declines, leading to an overall drop in consumer spending in Q2 by 16 percent.”

If you want to see the glass as half full, sales in July weren't as horrible as sales in June and May. In those months, sales fell 28 and 29 percent.
