2K games reported that Max Payne 3 and Spec Ops: The Line sales were not as high as the company expected, leading to a financially disappointing quarter. While Max Payne 3 sold over three million copies --hardly a flop -- the game's sales were just not as high as the company predicted, pre-release.
Overall, 2K Games' net revenue was $226.1 million, as compared to $334.4 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2012. The company lost $110.8 million, as compared to $8.6 million last year.
"We had a disappointing quarter," said 2K Games Strauss Zelnick in a financial conference call. "We'll take it on the chin... the right thing to do is to recognize our strengths and look forward."
2K is looking forward to the release of Borderlands 2 as well as BioShock Infinite, two games that the company feels will (at least partially) make up for the poor performance of some of the earlier games.
If you were hoping for Grand Theft Auto 5 news, sorry. When asked for word on whether the game is coming out in 2012, and how the development is going, Zelnick said, "We haven't talked about a release date, and we can't talk about a release date we haven't announced."
Same for The Agent. 2K is not talking about that game, either.
