Minecraft v1.3 Arrives On August 1

Mojang promised to put out a "pre-release" version of the v1.3 Minecraft update that is confirmed for release on August 1, 2012, and that pre-release version is now here. The early version is identical to what's coming next week; Mojang has simply gotten into the habit of releasing these a week early to help server admins and modders prepare for the change.

None of which should stop you from updating right now if you're a properly dedicated Minecraft fan. If this is your first time, fear not: it's a simple process. Download the client version of the update -- a file labeled as Minecraft.jar -- and drop it into the .minecraft/bin directory (found in the AppData/Roaming folder on a Windows 7 PC). You might want to make a backup of the Minecraft.jar file that's there already, but don't stress too much about that; it's going to be replaced next week, after all.

Now, if you'll excuse me I have to go mine for emeralds and seek out new desert and jungle temples for treasures to trade with those mute yet increasingly useful villagers...
