Last night at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises in Aurora, Colorado, a masked gunman opened fire in the crowded theater, killing 12 people and injuring dozens. According to authorities, the gunman used an assault rifle and two handguns. A suspect, James Holmes, 24, is in police custody.
According to witnesses, the gunman, clad all in black and wearing a bullet-proof vest, gas mask and helmet, entered the theater through an emergency exit and released a canister of tear gas before opening fire on the crowd. Authorities say the shooter was not connected with any sort of terrorist organization, and his motives are unknown. He was found by police in the parking lot of the theater and did not resist arrest.
President Obama cut short a campaign visit and issued a statement saying, "There are going to be other days for politics. This is a day for prayer and reflection."
"We are committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded," the president said. "If there is any take away from this, it's that life is fragile. Our time here is limited and it's precious."
On behalf of everyone here at G4 our thoughts go out to the families of the victims.
