Resident Evil is one of the only video game properties to spawn a truly successful series of major motion pictures, and director Paul W.S. Anderson, Milla Jovovich and Michelle Rodriguez were on-hand at Comic-Con 2012 to show off the attest flick from the franchise: Resident Evil: Retribution.
This is the series’ fifth installment, and in it, we see a new side of protagonist Alice, a softer side. The trailer shown puts Alice in a pre-apocalypse setting, with a husband, a child and a normal life. Presumably, we'll get to see the breakdown of society, and how a (seeming) suburban mom becomes a cold-blooded, zombie-slaying machine.
The gentle side of Alice was a stretch for Jovovich, who said it was scarier to play a vulnerable character than face a thousand zombies.
"It was horrifying, because, to be honest, I didn't really know what it was like to play a normal person in the Resident Evil world. Normal people have it rough." No doubt, Milla.
Rodriquez paid homage to her co-star's icon status among female action stars, saying, "Milla was doing that sh*t way before I even started acting."
To close out the panel, Anderson and company gave the assembled movie-faithful what it really came for: Footage of Retribution. The lights in Hall H dimmed, and we were treated to two minutes of the climax of the movie, a clash of titans where Milla Jovovich's and Michelle Rodriguez's characters square off in a battle to the death. Not to give anything away, but the fight scene was amazing -- frantic, beautiful and supremely violent. Anderson said the entire 9 minute battle took "months and months" to film, and it looks like it.
We'll all get to check out the latest Resident Evil when Retribution hits theaters on September 14, 2012.
