Boxer8 has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Ouya (pronounced ooo-yah), the Android based $99 video game console that will allow curious gamers to try any game on the set for free. The company needs to raise $950,000 goal by August 9, 2012 which doesn't seem like it'll be a problem since they made made more than $422,000 in under two days. It seems as though gamers are making their voices heard loud and clear.

UPDATE 11:17am, 7/11/12: And the donations just keep on coming, as Boxer 8 has now raised $3,117,157 thanks to the contributions of 24,612 backsers. With 28 days to go, there's really no telling how high the earnings will go. But I'm guessing it will be enough to buy at least 18 boxes of Cracker Jacks.

UPDATE 3:20 PM, 7/10/12: Boxer8 and Ouya have officially reached their $950,000 goal in less than 24 hours! Currently the total money raised is at $1.2MM and Boxer8 still has 29 days to coax more backers in to supporting their console. You can back the Ouya at its Kickstarter page.

You may still be wondering "What's an Ouya?" which is to be expected. The recently announced Ouya will be powered by Android and every game on the console will have to have some sort of free component. Other impressive specs that the Ouya boasts include a Tegra3 quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an HDMI connection to the TV, with support for up to 1080p HD, 8GB of internal flash storage, and it'll come with a wireless controller complete with a built in touchpad.

For more on the Ouya, keep reading.

Additionally, every Ouya console is a dev kit. Developers won't have to purchase a license or SDK to make their games on it and Boxer8's boasting that the next AAA game could be made from someone's bedroom using Ouya.

While that may be a bit far fetched, some developers are definitely on board with the system already. Creator of Prince of Persia Jordan Mechner said, "Who wouldn't want a beautiful piece of industrial design that sells for $99, plugs straight into your TV, and gives you access to a huge library of games?" about Ouya. Other developers are excited about the prospect of the system and Mojang, the developers behind the extremely successful Minecraft have said if the system resonates with gamers then they could see all of their current games making their way to the platform.

"We're handing the reins over to the developer with only one condition: at least some gameplay has to be free," said Boxer8. "We borrowed the free-to-play model from games like League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Triple Town, and many others. Developers can offer a free demo with a full-game upgrade, in-game items or powers, or ask you to subscribe."

Since Ouya will run on Android, many skeptics are wondering if the console is just about playing mobile and tablet games on the TV, but Boxer8 firmly denies this. "Ouya was not created merely to host ports of existing Android games. We’ve built this badboy to play the most creative content from today’s best known AAA game designers as well as adored indie gamemakers," they said.

Aside from all of its other features, one thing that could make Ouya stand out above any other console could be its eSports compatibility. The system will let you watch Twitch.tv content right on your television, which is what many fans in the eSports community have been asking for for years now. Huge StarCraft 2 tournaments and user streams will now be easily accessible on the TV rather than your small computer monitor.

If you want to learn more about Ouya, go ahead and check out the Kickstarter campaign. The best thing you can do to support the console right now is to become a backer. If you pledge $99 or more you get an Ouya. Ouya, Ouya!
