Dave Gibbons, the artist on Alan Moore's outstanding Watchmen graphic novel, is teamed up with Revolution Studios, the developer behind Beneath A Steel Sky and Broken Sword, for an adventure game. Zero details about the game were revealed in Gibbons' interview with Eurogamer, though he did say that "it will look like a Dave Gibbons game." Considering that such a thing has never existed, I think we'll all settle for a game that shares its artistic sensibilities with Watchmen.
Okay, that's not ALL he said. "It'll have a strong graphic identity," Gibbons revealed. "It's going to be something that combines a lot of the things I'm perhaps best known for, which are a design sense and a sense of symbolism and maybe an obsessive attention to background detail."
Development hasn't started yet, but it is expected to once Gibbons wraps up his work on the Secret Service comic, which he's working on with Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar, and once Revolution wraps up work on a new, unannounced game in the Broken Sword series.
As exciting as all of this sounds, bear in mind that it's not actually fresh news. Broken Sword creator Charles Cecil revealed in 2009 that he would be working on an adventure game with Dave Gibbons, ironically enough in an interview with Eurogamer. The two worked together on Beneath A Steel Sky, both the original and the recent-ish iPhone port. Based on what Gibbons said in the new interview, it seems like they have a much more coherent plan of attack than they did three years ago, so hopefully we'll hear about some movement on this soon.
