Nintendo 3DS owners will soon be able to make good use of the device's Wi-Fi connection, with the publisher confirming during its latest streaming Nintendo Direct press conference that paid DLC is coming to both New Super Mario Bros. 2 -- now confirmed for an August 19, 2012 release -- and Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle (via Gamasutra). On the Mario side, you can expect some extra levels in the game's Coin Rush mode, which sends players through a gauntlet of three random levels with the goal of collecting as many coins as possible.
Paid DLC is great, and a first for Nintendo's first-party titles, but Professor Layton fans get an even sweeter deal. Mask of Miracle hits stores in November, and those who own the game can look forward to a full year of FREE DLC, in the form of daily puzzle releases. All of this extra content ought to go well with the 3DS XL and its bundled 4GB SD card.
