THQ confirms that the Enter the Dominatrix DLC for Saint's Row: The Third has been cancelled, with the dev team at Volition now working to integrate that content into a fourth Saint's Row game, due for release in 2013. Dominatrix was to be a standalone expansion releasing later on in 2012, but the publisher's new president, Jason Rubin, directed Volition to go bigger.
The news is confirmed in a press release, which includes a statement from Rubin laying out the reasons for the change in plans. There are no additional details on how Enter the Dominatrix will work into the next Saint's Row or how the change in plans affects any work already done on the next entry in the series.
Here's what Rubin had to say:
When I looked at the Enter The Dominatrix expansion in production at Volition, I was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise. I asked the team what it could achieve given more time, more resources, and a broader scope for the project. We all agreed we wanted to play that game. When it comes to Saints Row, it’s clear our fans want bigger, better, and even more over the top, and that’s why Enter The Dominatrix will now be incorporated into a vastly expanded, full-fledged sequel, scheduled for calendar 2013.
What do you make of this development? As nice as that statement from Rubin sounds, canning the Dominatrix DLC also allows THQ turn a partially finished expansion into a proper Saint's Row sequel which can then be sold as a full-priced release.
