Bethesda Softworks confirms in a morning press release that id Software's Doom 3: BFG Edition will hit stores on October 16, 2012 in North America, with a European release to follow on October 19. The recently announced remastered version of the 2004 game and its Resurrection of Evil add-on also includes seven entirely new levels -- dubbed The Lost Mission -- as well as the original versions of Doom and Doom 2. The price sits at $39.99 for the console versions and $29.99 for the PC version.
I had the distinct pleasure of kicking off my time at E3 2012 with Doom 3: BFG Edition, as seen through the custom Oculus Rift VR headset that was hand-built by one of the Doom series' architects, John Carmack. It was a dizzying experience, but an awesome one, and it filled me with hope for what the future of at-home VR technology might one day bring us.
True, not everyone will be able to take advantage of the game's built-in support for head tracking peripherals. But we'll all get to enjoy the thrill of shooting up swarms of floating, flaming heads in high definition.
