Microsoft's new tablet, The Surface was recently announced by the company at a press event in Los Angeles. Coming right off the event, the one thing we have on our minds is: can it play games? According to the specs released by Microsoft, the answer is most definitely yes.
The Surface is a high-definition, entertainment driven device equipped with voice recognition, a touchpad with left and right buttons, USB and micro SD card slots, as well as a full keyboard built in to the stand. Spec wise, the Surface is equipped with a Nvidia graphics card to offer excellent visuals and an ARM processor to drive the device at lightning fast speeds, which is just what you'll want when you're gaming on the go.
The Surface will probably be able to utilize Microsoft Smartglass functionality as well, although it was specifically mentioned at the press event. Smartglass is an app which allows you to use your smart device to control and interact with media on your Xbox. Microsoft Xbox LIVE Corporate Vice President Marc Whitten said it best at E3 2012, "With Xbox SmartGlass, movies are more immersive, TV is more engaging, music is more interactive and games are more thrilling."
With all this in mind, we wanted to start the rumor mill spinning and speculate on the kind of games we might see coming to Surface in the near future. Read on for our full list.
An immersive Halo entry seems like it'd be perfect for the Surface. The game could either be a first-person shooter or a real-time strategy game like the successful Halo Wars. With top-end graphics, tons of missions, fast-paced vehicles, great sound, and the responsive touch interface of the Surface, we can totally see you tapping your way through one of Master Chief's epic adventures.
We think a Forza title could definitely be speeding its way towards the Surface. With successful tablet racers like GT Motor Academy already out for the iPad, Forza seems like the perfect fit for the Surface thanks to its quick processing speed and visual power. A Forza title could also take advantage of the Surface's social capabilities, allowing players to possibly play tracks from all over the world and upload their scores to leaderboards for specific courses.
What could be more perfect for the Surface than a Fable action-adventure game? On top of slaying countless enemies and exploring vast, beautiful worlds, you could play minigames and transfer the gold to your Xbox via Smartglass. The possibilities seem almost endless for a Fable-esque game for the Surface and it's a game we're anticipating.
Age of Empires
An isometric real-time strategy title like Age of Empires would be great on the Surface thanks to its touch-screen interface. With the processing power of the Surface, dozens of sprites could fit on the screen and all of the standard RTS elements like resource gathering would be able to be included.
Like in Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise for the Nintendo DS, players could create a beautiful garden using the touch-screen interface of the Surface. Beautiful graphics, simple gameplay, and a variety of tools that make use of all different aspects of the Surface could make Viva piñatas an excellent addition to the Surface's library
