Metal Gear Online Officially Goes Offline

Metal Gear Online Charm

It's been a good, lengthy run for Metal Gear Online, the multiplayer mode in Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, but after four years of stealthily racking up an impressive body count the service is finally being shut down. Konami flipped the switch on the game's online service at 11am EST on June 12, 2012.

When you consider the fact that most multiplayer-oriented games these days have a shelf life of no longer than a year or two, Metal Gear Online's four-year run was pretty solid. Konami said in a statement that the original intent had been for it to stick around for three years, but the deadline was pushed back to accommodate the community's continued interest.

There will be no more delays, however. The lights are officially extinguished for Metal Gear Online. Where will you turn now to get your multiplayer third-person action fix?
