The Cave is coming. Sega, Ron Gilbert and Double Fine's game is a 2D sidescrolling adventure that combines elements of The Lost Vikings with classic Gilbert titles like Maniac Mansion to (hopefully) create something entirely unique and awesome.

Like Maniac Mansion, The Cave features multiple protagonists. According to The Verge, There are seven possible heroes, each with different abilities and a specific "area" within the game. The characters: the Monk, the Adventurer, the Hillbilly, the Scientist, the Twins, the Knight, and the Time Traveler. You'll pick three at the beginning of the game and be able to switch between them at will. Each character has a different reason for setting foot in the titular cave. Examples (from The Verge): The Hillbilly  is looking for love. The Monk is seeking his missing master. The Time Traveler wants to right a wrong from the past.

The game looks like a platformer, but it definitely has adventure elements. You'll have to save and manipulate objects to solve convoluted puzzles, a rigamarole that will be familiar to anyone who ever played Zork. Different characters will have different means of accomplishing the same task. The Hillbilly's infinite swimming allows him to swim long enough to avoid obstacles.

Sega publishes The Cave as a downloadable title for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in early 2013.
