BioWare logoBioWare has laid off an unspecified amount of employees who worked on their MMO, Star Wars: The Old Republic. The layoffs affected BioWare Austin, who were the main developers of the game. The layoffs are part of a larger "restructuring" but EA has not announced how that will take affect.

SWTOR was released five months ago and it's not uncommon for publishers to let people go after a game launches. An EA representative told Gamasutra some employees would be able join other teams within EA.

We hope those affected find new jobs soon.

I played SWTOR for a the first three months. The reason why I stopped is because there was nothing to do end game, and leveling through all of the dialogue again wasn't very appealing. Quite literally the only thing the game did differently was added in fully dialogued material for an MMO. Aside from that there really wasn't anything special. For an MMO it really tried to make you play single player by giving you instanced zones that only people in your party could go in with you. In other words it wasn't very good and I don't blame them for cutting so many people from this game. Especially since the new content that they all worked on was so meager it didn't even take a full day of my time to get through all of it, and yet it took them a whole three months of working on it to actually put it in the game.

I knew SWTOR was gonna fail. First you charge to play. You charge insane prices. And oh yeah you charge to play. And you spend 200 million on a game that failed. You lost 400K subscribers last month for a reason. Most people bought the game, played for 30 days and stopped. Now that Diablo 3 is out, and Guild Wars 2 is coming out in a month, they only way you guys are gonna keep this game going is if you make it free to play. If not, then you will be known for being a company that only cares fro money instead of its consumers.

As much as I tried to love that game, I couldn't. I did enjoy the storyline experience but once you hit end-game, there was absolutely nothing at all to do except do the same boring encounters over and over. I've played MMOs for years, but this one had just nothing to offer at end-game. If they don't restructure the team and do a bit of focus on blending an actual story with end-game and making those encounters fun, it's going to bomb even worse.

This is what happens when you have less than 100k subs and claim 1.3 mil.

    Eh.

I use to like Star Wars. I really did. Even a year or two ago I did.

    But I've been hit by a serious realization that I absolutely hate George Lucas and I think horrible things of him. You know George Lucas once said;

"People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians, and if the laws of the United States continue to condone this behavior, history will surely classify us as a barbaric society."

This from the man who has taken Star Wars, his own creation, and turned into a cash cow targeted at children.

And you could argue to me that the edits made to Star Wars over the years were to better the movie. That somehow the 'duet' in Jabba's palace made the movie better and that the insertion of young Skywalker's Face into the end of Jedi makes everything feel more authentic.

You could even argue that the seemingly useless addition of 'NOOOOOOOOOO!' somehow conveys an emotional torment when Vader throws the Emperor down the tubey shaft.

But when I think about it, you can not justify the editing of 'A New Hope' to show Guido shooting first so that children understand that Han had no choice but to kill him.

Are you kidding me? Star Wars is the closet thing Lucas will ever had to being a 'work of art' and he went back and changed it so that it was kid friendly.

This is a guy who would most likely put pants and sandals on the Statue of David if he owned the rights to the statue and wanted to get another Cartoon Network show for putting monies in his pockets.

And it's a shame because Star Wars has some fantastic potential. The force unleashed was a very fun Star Wars game. Then I played The Force Unleashed 2 and I honestly don't understand what went wrong with the game. It's like they really wanted to make a good game but then Lucas came in and said something that made everyone go retard and halfway through the game they just stopped and began throwing food at each other. Then another team came in, was told they had 4 weeks to finish the game and instead of putting any actual work into the game they went back and made the Boss Fights even worse and longer then they ever should have been. Have you guys played TFU2? It's a travesty of a game after the first half of it.

And I don't even have enough strength to go on about how horrible it is that Jedi's now are magicians who can defy every single law of gravity/physics and sanity. Only children look at a 7 year old driving a pod racer through a death track and think it's 'cool' or see a guy jump from the top of building, fall 500 miles through busy traffic without hitting a single car and then landing perfectly in a speeder driven by his bud bud.

So when it comes to anything Star Wars these days, or Lucas anything, I hope it fails.

Because I am a bitter and nasty man who wants everyone to be as bitter as I!...

On the plus side have you guys played Skyrim? I recommend it!
