Microsoft Offers Refunds To SDTV-Owning Minecraft Buyers

Microsoft is offering refunds to those who bought Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition on Xbox Live Arcade only to discover that the game's split-screen multiplayer feature is not supported by standard definition TVs. The game's Xbox.com/Xbox Live Marketplace listing has also been updated to warn customers of the standard def limitation.

The publisher told Kotaku that refunds will be offered to those customers who purchased Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition before the XBLM listing was updated. If you fall into that category, you only have to contact Microsoft's customer support center to get the ball rolling on your refund.

Does this mean i can get a refund even though i have an HDTV already? Cuz it seems theres no need to prove that i have an HDTV.

It's nice of MS to do that, but I think the only reason they are doing it is because they didn't clearly state it. They assumed, and you know what they say about assuming.

It's understandable that not everyone has caught up with HDTV's, but we're getting to that point where if you don't have access to an HDTV you can't expect newer technology to work with your setup. You buy an HD gaming console, but don't have an HDTV. It's just one of the many small details that people sometimes neglect.

Not to get off topic, but a good example of people neglecting things like this are when comparing the price of a gaming computer to consoles. A console may be cheaper initially, but people forget the additional costs.

I called Microsoft to inquire about this since I have that same problem of not been able to play splitscreen without an HDTV. What this article doesn't say is that they require you to delete the game from your Xbox 360 in order for them to issue a refund or else it would be consider as theft to them even though it was their mistake for not posting the requirement on their site. I rather keep the game and save for a HDTV then not been able to play the game for a 1600 points.

That's kind of silly. It's time to ditch the square TV's, people.

I thought I was late to the HDTV party and I got my first HDTV like 4 years ago.

Up until Christmas I was still using a SDTV. It worked fine and I had no real reason to purchase an HDTV. Now, most games being made assuming everyone owns an HDTV. It pretty much impossible to read any on screen text with an SDTV now, so I was forced to upgrade. My kids still use the old school tv's and there is no reason for them to upgrade. My oldest is only 9 and he will survive without HD and Minecraft is perfect for his age, so yeah some people did buy this game for the split screen aspect so they could play with their kids or so the kids can play with each other. I'm not one of them, but I know they are out there. It's just why people drive the same cars for 10+ years, because there is no need to upgrade if it still runs great.

Good for Microsoft. I wonder how many people still play a Xbox 360 or Playstation 3 on a non-HDTV anyway.

I appreciate that Microsoft is doing this for those who are affected (I'm not one of those) but I do have to say I'm mildly surprised someone would buy a 20 dollar game just for splitscreen...I've been having a grand time with Minecraft and I haven't even bothered with the Splitscreen. I prefer the online play anyways. Now will it specify that those who get a refund will have to remove the license of the game from their account? Because if not it seems to me like a lot of people might exploit this to snag a free 1600 MS points.
