Prototype 2 Tops April Sales; Overall Gaming Sales Down 32 Percent

Prototype 2 was the top-selling game in April. The supernaturally tinged dystopian action game beat out Kinect Star Wars and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, numbers two and three on the charts, respectively. This is great news if you're a fan of publisher Activision or developer Radical, but April was not a good month for gaming software as a whole. According to the figures released by industry analysts at the NPD Group, sales were down 32 percent versus last year.

“I think what the new physical retail content sales reflect a very light release schedule in terms of the amount of compelling new games," said the NPD's Anita Frazier in a statement. "Last April, the top seven titles outsold the top-selling title this year, and, simply stated, there were notably fewer new market introductions. I think it’s a simple as that because when we see compelling content come into the market, the games are still selling as well as ever – we just saw a lot less this April as compared to last.”

Ok lucidity and DPsx72, its time for a beer summit!

Lucidity, I think its safe to say that while the 360 is doing very well, there is definitely room for improvement by MS in the next gen (cough red rings cough). However, to say that the PS3 sucks or that it is somehow inferior to the 360 is, while subjective, is just crazy.

DPsx72, there is no denying the fact that compared to last gen, Sony has fallen off its pedestal. This in no way means that the PS3 sucks, but it's not the end all be all that fanboys claimer about.

Bottom line, there are great exclusives for both but thankfully most games are multi-platform and are nearly identical so neither side has to live with an inferiority complex. Both MS and Sony are smart and know exactly what the other is doing and for the most part going to do so you can expect that the next gen will be more of the same with both offerings coming out roughly at the same time (within a year) and both will have basically the same capabilities. Also, both will tout some spec that they claim "proves" their console is superior to the other's. They are in competition, thats their job. Thankfully, our job is to sit back and enjoy awesome gaming experiences on any console we decide to buy.

Nice of you to dodge my questions and show nothing. I feel comfortable sitting here, knowing I got the best once again. 360 will never top anything and as I explained before they're dropping rapidly because they rushed into a lead and are unable to maintain it. Sony's extended support (10 years or whatever) will ensure a respectable second place behind Nin this gen. As we all know, game sell hardware and Sony has them coming in waves. M$ has already committed to showing few games and more digital nonsense at E3. It's already predicted they will lose the show (not that we expected anything different).

Basically you have nothing and never will. Enough people can make sense of the facts and observations I write, there's no lie and I'm never wrong. By the way did you catch Sony's latest report? They were the best selling platform as I've been saying all along. Something like 14 mill versus M$'s 13.5 mill. Eat that fact earhole. I'll let ya absorb the truth for a while, let the rage and sense of defeat settle in.

For the record people, I'm not a fan of any one console. I have 32 of the damn things. Sega, Sony, Nin, Atari, a pinball machine, etc. I go where the good games are. My task is only to keep little fools in their place.

Yeah when the facts come out the fanboys only spout off madness from their imaginations. That's why I made a resolution this year to never to reply to any of them ever again.

OT, I tried the demo for Star Wars Kinect and I have to say I was impressed. I slowly waved my hand and turned my wrist with the light sabre and it was almost 1 to 1 movement. I was not expecting that to happen! I also found the force powers to work rather well. Pod racing was very responsive too.

I really didn't expect it to be as good as it was. It was,...FUN.

Can't deny there are more games playable on 360 in the top 10.

Can't deny there are more exclusive/console exclusive in the top 10.

Can't show me a MOVE only game equivalent to the Kinect games in the 2012 top 100

Ah, forgot that part too. The simple fact that the only exclusives with any sales you can find are throwaway Kinect titles and some dancing games truly shows how pathetic the platform is, along with your argument. Ooh, what a hardcore platform to offer exercise games...

Why do they have to be Move exclusive? It's meant as an option, not a requirement. Trying to cut out the better sellers by wording it wrong? Find a new tactic. Talk about lies obliterated, how about avoiding being obliterated yourself?

They don't have to be directly from M$, they're still US numbers leaving out 2/3's of the data. That's why it's always conveniently left out, misworded, or otherwise created to leave half-truths. M$ will never be a dominant player. Nin has the sales. Sony has the games. PC has the online. 360 clings to scraps and there's really no way to argue against that.

I mean look at their future. There are NO games besides Halo and even that is stale. M$ is going casual like the fools claimed the Wii did. Nin still makes good games so that doesn't speak well for M$'s chances. The majority don't use it for gaming anymore due to the aforementioned lack of titles. It's a streaming content box. They sold several developers. They can't produce a handheld. Which of these are good signs to you? M$ can ride on OS profits to make up for a terrible gaming division. Kinda like how Sony can rely on their gaming division to compensate for weak sales in TV's and audio products.

You aren't even trying to defend yourself anymore huh? It's getting easier each day to clarify your lies. Everyone is catching on too. Lol.

I can definitely see prototype 2 being number 1 considering that it was the only good game that came out in April.

Oh and for anyone who hasn't played it yet or is on the verge about buying it I just platinum-ed it last night and it wasn't that great. I loved Prototype and would highly recommend it over 2. The the two main problems I had with 2 were that

1) There's seriously nothing to do after you beat the game and side missions the first time. New Game+ is so f'ing boring, even on intense mode.

2) They made Alex the protagonist from 1 into a huge p^$$y! I loved him in 1 and I don't even mind that they make you play as Heller in 2 but they just destroyed his character.

But It is the easiest platinum I've ever gotten I know there's people out there that play just for trophies so yeah.

I love you all so much.

Hmm, 'playable on 360'? Did you learn that from M$? Bending the facts to appear better than they are? Playable doesn't mean exclusive, and the 360 rides on the tail of games that sold better elsewhere.

People were desperate to find a use for Kinect. It's collecting dust faster than the Wii and Move that's without a doubt. Sadly, the reality is sales don't equal quality, as proven by Kinect itself.

Spending because they include their obscene Live fees and digital services. Funny that being the only non-customer friendly platform due to the numerous fees you'd assume that was a good thing. Profit, perhaps but certainly not to the customers satisfaction.

It only sells in the US. The market is worldwide so why do you insist on hiding the REAL numbers? Afraid to see last gen systems outselling the 360?

Incorrect. M$ doesn't have a handheld. Those platforms count for market share and sales, do they not? Typical to leave out half the data to appear better for the floundering M$.
