Microsoft has made its $99 Xbox official. The 360 with Kinect and a 4GB HD is available in Microsoft stores, and is only sold with a 2-year commitment to Xbox Live at $14.99 a month. Check it out on the official Microsoft site. Print the coupon and stop by a Microsoft store for the cheapest ever Xbox.
My question: is this kind of subsidized console going to catch on? We did the math, and the ultimate savings over traditional Xbox ownership is about $39 over two years, but the $15-a-month version of Gold might have some extra content.
So what do you think? Is this a good idea or not? Anyone planning on picking one up?

can't you get a yearly subscription for like 60 bucks?

Does it make me pessimistic or skeptical that I fear this is a hint to a new pricing structure that will apply across the board? Even if the "interest method" applies here, it just tells me this is another service that progressively demands more financial commitment from their customers. If this outlook proves true, along with some of the new changes coming with the next gen consoles, I really am putting gaming behind me. It's time and money better spent else where anyhow.

I highly doubt there will be special content for these monthly gold members.
Also, if you pay for Gold by the year this would be a loss. You'd be spending $40 less at the end by not paying each month, and not have to worry about a cancellation fee. That's not taking into account buying a cheaper yearly Gold card during a sale or on Amazon.
Personally I don't see the appeal, but I also didn't see the appeal of the 4GB consoles, and those sold like crazy. This definitely isn't aimed at most of us.

It's MS's long tail.

Could this mean that they are gonna reveal a new console and they know no one will buy the regular 360?

Total Cost:
Regular 8GB 360 w/ Kinect and Gold Membership after 2 years: $419
The same, but via the MS Store "deal": $459
Discuss.

This was rumored to come with a 2 year warranty and extra content.
I checked Staples and found the cost for the extra year is $45.
Might be some other warranty deals for less but it appears that this deal represents a $6.00 savings.

It sounded like a good deal until I realized the $15 a year for two year XBL contract.

this is no different than going down to a furniture store and buying a chair.
If one pays up front then ALL the money leaves ones wallet immediately and you get the best deal.
Pay in installments and there is interest charged so the initial outlay is less but it cost slightly more in the long run, naturally as one might be taking home a $300 piece for $100.
Sometimes a retailer will say they have zero interest but bring out a administration fee, $39 perhaps.
