Microsoft has made its $99 Xbox official. The 360 with Kinect and a 4GB HD is available in Microsoft stores, and is only sold with a 2-year commitment to Xbox Live at $14.99 a month. Check it out on the official Microsoft site. Print the coupon and stop by a Microsoft store for the cheapest ever Xbox.
My question: is this kind of subsidized console going to catch on? We did the math, and the ultimate savings over traditional Xbox ownership is about $39 over two years, but the $15-a-month version of Gold might have some extra content.
So what do you think? Is this a good idea or not? Anyone planning on picking one up?

Only in Microsoft stores? They do know how inconvenient that is, don't they? I would have to drive 7 hours to get to the closest store (Atlanta) to me. Looking at their website it looks like only 13 states have a Microsoft store. If they're going to do something like this, they should go ahead and make it an option at all stores selling xbox 360s, not just they're own.

What's with the comments saying 4GB consoles can't play online? My little brother plays his 4Gb console online......

This is just a scam for Microsoft to sell more 250GB hard drives(they are most likely over stocked), since 4GB consoles do not play online, and why have a gold membership without online play? It suckers people into also buying the 250GB hard drive. I'd rather pay $149 for the same deal, but with a 250GB hard drive. The hard drives themselves are selling for over $50 in most outlets.
Buyer beware definately...

I bet all the xbox fools will be like... what a bargain.LOL..They still don't realize they can get the same content for free on the pc or Ps3.The 360 is a joke.It just has become a more powerful wii in the last year. They pay for a yearly service and get a dash filled with ads.Might as well call it a AdBox 360.Or maybe a Wii Box 360.Better stick to CrapBox 360 because that incorporates everything the xbox has become.

This would be great, only if I werent already paying for XBL through my credit card. I want the slim (not at the cost of paying for XBL when I already have it), bc im still running the 2nd GEN Elite. Plus Id buy the 120-320GB hard drive anyways bc I need the space (given I already have a 120GB)

Id be ok with buying the nest gen console for around $200 then paying $15-20/month for full xbox live (or equivalent) service for 2 years. Much easier than paying like $600 up front followed by $10 a month

i think this is a great idea, and what most people dont notice is that the Xbox that comes with this deal has a 2 year warranty, whereas if you bought all the stuff that this deal has only includes a 1 year warranty, and i'm pretty sure an extra year of warranty costs somewhere around $60-70, so this deal happens to be much cheaper than buying everything all on Amazon or other places, the only flaw i see in this promotion is that there are no Microsoft Stores in Canada, where i'm from, so as much as i really would like to pick up on this great amazing deal, i can't D:

What if I live in Canada? There are no Microsoft stores near Montreal as far as I know.

I already have my 360, so there's no deal in this for me. But I'd be very interested in a similar such deal for the next generation of consoles. But I'd like the math to work out a little better than it does on this deal. Probably will, too. This is just a first offer as the company tries to figure out the best way to make this work.

It is the same reason why people use gamefly, a lot of families can't afford to give up 300 right out of their pocket, but they do have a little money left over every month so this is perfect for someone who isn't rich but still wants to be entertained.

Pay attention. you have the CHOICE to pay everything for x-box all in one blow and get it cheaper, or use this deal and pay more, but the payments are spread out over time. it get's people that normally don't save up 300-400 dollars for material things to buy their product. they normally wouldn't buy the idea of spread out payments sounds better and some people like payments better. stop complaining if it doesn't even effect you. it's not like they are forcing you to use this deal, they are giving you a CHOICE you should thank them for giving you a Choice.

LMAO! Looks like the critic's are right this time! The X-Box 360 slim is a 99.00 machine ,looks like they are copying Sony PS 2's price drop to 99.00.(Microsoft store for the cheapest ever Xbox.) LMAO! Enjoy your red ring of death and game freeze and your scratched disk.

I wouldn't do this because since its only sold with a 2 year commitment to Xbox Live at $14.99 a month it means you would be paying for about 300 for two years when it only cost me 100 for 2 years THIS IS A RIP OFF!!!!! who ever gets this is really stupid and is burning there money

So I'd like to see this so called math that was done. 4gb xbox with kinect is $300 plus gold for 2 years is $100 give or take where you buy it from for a total of $400. While doing this "deal" brings you up to $460. Not seeing the "about $39 savings".

Sure it is more in the long run. This deal is for people out there with $300 stickershock. M$ will tap a large population balking at current prices. Spreading out payments over time hurts less psychologically. Think of it as an Xbox purchased with a Microsoft credit card (with interest). I predict a substantial sales bump. The real impact will be increased profits from online services. My parents will probably buy one to use as a media center for Netflix and Xfinity. Plus, my kids will take their games during sleep-overs.

Video game consoles are a novelty. The are cheap compared to the more necessary things people pay in installments for, like cars or houses. If one can't afford the initial purchase price of a 360, maybe they shouldn't buy one. Or maybe they should save their money, settle on a just buying the console, and upgrading to Kinect later.
Paying less initially, only to pay more in the long run is not going to help their financial situation, especially if they are paying $360 for a service that is only worth $120. That type of logic and lack of restraint is why so many people are in financial trouble.
Microsoft isn't giving you an awesome deal; they're just finding a way to prey on the fiscally irresponsible to make even more money.
