According to IGN, the next generation of the Xbox is already being manufactured. According to IGN's source, assembly of the next-generation Xbox hardware started recently at the Austin, Texas branch of a company called Flextronics, the same company that assembles 360 hardware.
According to the report, Flextronics first created a testing group dedicated to comprehensive marketing, software, and hardware tests of the next Xbox. With that finished, Flextronics started building the next generation of Xbox. Microsoft is probably manufacturing development kits, consoles game designers use to develop games.
If this turns out to be true, don't think it means that the Xbox 720 (or whatever they end up calling it) will be available soon. Microsoft has already said it's not showing a new console at E3 2012, so it might be a while until we even hear anything about it.
Neither Microsoft and Flextronic commented on the rumors.

I'm a little surprised by this, isn't the 360 selling pretty well? Hell, I've bought 5 myself

I'm sure you'll be interested to know since you keep bringing it up, the US preorders Chart is out.
Halo4 is 28 weeks out and sitting at #3 with 221k
Starhawk is 2 weeks out and sitting at # 18 with a whopping 51k (sarcasm)

That's right Liquidswords
The 360 sold 7 million more games JUST in 2011. Not including Kinect Adventure, I felt bad fpr the PS3 so include sales of Spots Champions even though it is bundled with Move.
Anhell
I like new things.
Liquid Swords
Sorry, 7 million more.
Liquid Swords
So a console that has been on the market an entire year before the PS3 only sold a mere 5 million more games and produced the same amount of top 10 titles as the one year late PS3?
Interesting.

So true TooMuchRazMatazz, don't forget that the Xbox 360 failure rate is 54%.

@lucidity
% of sales due to repeat customers buying a 2nd or 3rd XBox due to red ring of death... 200%?
And the Wii kind of feels like a fluke sometimes. It had some good moments, but seemed more like a fad..

Didn't Microsoft already say that they're trying to keep the 360's lifespan longer than usual? They said they're not going to release a new Xbox for a long while.

History shows us that ppl weren't dumb enough to by a Ps3 after the PS2.
Let's check the numbers:
Wii...Big winner..sales up 400% over gamecube
360...winner...sales up almost 300% over Xbox
PS3...Big Loser..sales down 40% from PS2 (at 5 year mark)

Who's dumb enough to buy a launch next gen Xbox? How did those work for you last time?

I'll stick to my PC thanks

"Already"
The word already is used to suggest something is early. This is more than a few years too late.

If the hardware is being released to developers and kits will be released by the end of the year we should hear some announcements at E3 2013 followed by a release in 2014.
lucidity
Looking forward to seeing the 3rd generation of Xbox
