The Elder Scrolls Online has been announced by Bethesda. It is in development at Zenimax Online Studios, and is being developed for PC and Mac under the leadership of Matt Firor, who has spent the last two decades working in online game development.
“We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted,” said Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online. “It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”
According to Game Informer, The Elder Scrolls Online is set a millennium before the events of Skyrim and concerns the daedric prince Molag Bal trying to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm. The Elder Scrolls Online will feature "player-driven" PvP that pits the three player factions against each other in open-world warfare over the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne.
Further details are scant right now, but expect a screenshot later today and a teaser trailer tomorrow.

This sounds good for the MMO fanboys,I just hope they don;t shrink the characters down so it looks like WOW.That would really suck.I really hope the Dovahkin doesn't have shrinkage.

I like WoW. I like other MMORPGs. I have fun with them, regardless of how many people say they suck. I also like Elder Scrolls games (played Skyrim & Oblivion, mind you). An excellent single player adventure.
That said, I like them both separately. I am not warm to the idea of them joining together. Not everything has a peanut butter/chocolate thing going on. I'm highly skeptical of this idea, and they'll need major news to get me on board. All I can see them doing is stripping the best out of Elder Scrolls and bringing the worst out of MMORPGs.

I called this after playing Oblivion.
ALL IS RIGHT IN THE UNIVERSE.

I have played this series since Arena and this is the worst possible news for fans of the Elder Scrolls... MMOs destroy great series. If anyone thinks it will be like Skyrim, Oblivion, etc with lots of human players, you are mistaken. It will be something completely different. It is going to look like WOW, play like WOW, and attract little kids like WOW. RIP Elder Scrolls, I will remember you or what you truly are.

I really don't see why people wouldn't like an Elder Scrolls MMO. I hope they put in Morrowind and Oblivion into the game. I think that would be FANTASTIC.

You no what i hate? when Bethesda announces DLC for one CONSOLE. and not to dog Xbox players but im a dedicated Playstation fanboy, but i do respect xbox users, i used to own one (wasn't for me), but i feel as there playing favorites with a second place console. and let me stress CONSOLE because now there announcing online for PC! now i don't understand Bethesda. most the money of Skyrim sales was for the consoles PS3 and XBOX. if they were to make online it should be for consoles and further more the more core audience is on PS3 and XBOX. people would want to buy the because first and most importantly its Game of the Year but next important online!!!!!! Bethesdas really not thinking at all, and pissing off a lot of gamers with this decision. i just hope it comes out for consoles, not just PS3 or Xbox, both because its the smart decision and the right decision. As a fellow gamer if they don't i will still purchase there next Elder Scrolls, but not the collecters edition.

i cant stress this enough but please come out for xbox as well

Please get Korean devs to do the character meshes. Thank you.

How to make this a great idea.
Make map 10 times bigger then skyrim + Make the gameplay mechanics feel the same + make it so its similar to guild wars 1 where when you aren't in a major city you are in your own instance so douche-bags don't annoy you(maybe a couple instances or public though)= PROFIT

MAYBE FINALLY WE CAN GET DRAGON MOUNTS!!!!!

I've never played the other (then Skyrim) Elder Scrolls games. I actually don't recall off the top of my head if I've ever played any of Bethesda's other games.
But Skyrim is a beautiful and amazing game and I can't wait for the DLC.
Where as I no longer play games on PC (I stopped 10 years ago when it was clear I could not afford as a child to keep up with the industry) I am very happy to see this even though it's only on PC thus far.
I'd love it come out on Xbox but I think that if they tried to do a same day release for both platforms the PC version would be dumbed down to work on a Console. I don't think Bethesda would do this but ya never know.
So yeah I hope it comes to Xbox but if it is on PC first for a while I'll gladly understand... I'll most likely be busy messing around in Skyrim still.

Although I'm sure I'm one of the many who while playing Skyrim thought to himself "hmmm I know a friend who could use this." when picking up an item that was no use to me. I can't help but feel scared by even the prospect of this game. I've loved the elder scrolls since I first played Daggerfall when it dropped. Although, I see Bethesda isn't developing it, I could still see it being a detriment to the franchise overall if it were to bomb. I'm probably just worried to see one of my beloved franchises changing with the industry in the end. (wipes away a tear)

Elder Scrolls online?.................God help us all

Willthe Elder Scrolls online include the Morrowind Alswel and Oblivion landscapes aswell?
osurulz
@TheScatsbury Agreed. I think Co-op would be fun, but seriously an MMO? Items will be littered EVERYWHERE, the NPC's would all be dead, and fighting would be everywhere with people who are super high level pwning the newbies. Nobody could enjoy the game.
Bocuma
The world need not more MMOs. What would really be great though would have been some sort of implementation of a multiplayer system in Skyrim where you and up to # buddies can just walk around and do stuff together... I think that would be great. But not enough money to be made, I suppose.
