The Elder Scrolls Online has been announced by Bethesda. It is in development at Zenimax Online Studios, and is being developed for PC and Mac under the leadership of Matt Firor, who has spent the last two decades working in online game development.
“We have been working hard to create an online world in which players will be able to experience the epic Elder Scrolls universe with their friends, something fans have long said they wanted,” said Matt Firor, game director of The Elder Scrolls Online. “It will be extremely rewarding finally to unveil what we have been developing the last several years. The entire team is committed to creating the best MMO ever made – and one that is worthy of The Elder Scrolls franchise.”
According to Game Informer, The Elder Scrolls Online is set a millennium before the events of Skyrim and concerns the daedric prince Molag Bal trying to pull all of Tamriel into his demonic realm. The Elder Scrolls Online will feature "player-driven" PvP that pits the three player factions against each other in open-world warfare over the province of Cyrodiil and the Emperor's throne.
Further details are scant right now, but expect a screenshot later today and a teaser trailer tomorrow.

Please tell me it's not an MMO, but Co-op Elder Scrolls. Take Borderlands' co-op, put it in any modern Bethesda RPG, and all will be well in the world.

I used to think an MMO would give me my only wish from the Elder Scrolls creator/gods: That the Radiant AI be more lifelike. But after reading some of these hilarious fanboy posts against the idea, I'm not convinced the MMO "I" will be all that "Radiant."

This is complete and utter nonsense! I always remark at how wonderful Bethesda is for giving us a truly single player experience with each of the Elder Scrolls. We still share with our friends. We do it enough with Skryim, let me tell you.
The fact they have spent years of hard work on an MMO means they could have been focusing on a new SINGLE player game! Don't they realize that their success (like Oblivion and Skyrim) is based on the fact that there is a black hole-vacuum of single player RPGs? There aren't enough of them. We are starved for them. They are selling out and it's very frustrating. I agree with the person who mentioned it'll come out in 2025 and the person who remarked that those of us who have been their loyal players are against this.
People will just say, "Don't buy it." But, that's not the point. We want more open world single player games! MMOs are filled with 13 year old cyberbullies. It's not exactly your "friends" you end up playing with. You might get lucky and get some normal and nice people to play with. But, that is rare. Boo!!!!!

People don't seem to be able to get this through their skulls: this is going to be an MMO, not a way to play with your friends on your xbox or your ps3. MMOs DO NOT work on consoles, there just isn't a large enough control interface (control vs. keyboard and mouse). Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not bashing consoles in any way, shape, or form. I was a console gamer until about a month ago, but even then putting this on consoles wouldn't have made any sense to me. Until we can connect mouse and keyboard to consoles, PC/Mac will be the only place an MMO belongs.

I'm quite interested to see how this turns out. I know a bunch of stubborn people are complaining that it's gonna suck, but to the open-minded individual, this is a good idea. In all honesty, if it turns out bad then you can just not play it.

I like how people that just now got into the Elder Scrolls series with Skyrim are totally for this and those of us that have played it since Morrowind or before are AGAINST raping the series. lol

This will most likely mess up the TES lore so much that you won't even recognize it as being from the same universe. This is very sad news for true TES fans, especially ones that aren't into MMO's, and I'll be suprised if they don't come out with a console version. All that said, it will probably be the best MMO even if the experience will be nothing comparable to a personal role playing experience.
But this could also be a chance to revive all the things that Bethesda for some reason took out of the universe for no apparent reason such as spears, crossbows, flails, centaurs, every magic spell that has been removed since Arena, etc., but I will be pissed if they don't keep the same and familiar province structure that fans have come to know in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim which are much better than any MMO experience could be.

This is a bad idea. Bethesda has no real Multiplayer or competitive background, at least no positive experience that I am aware of.
The good part is the engine they are likely to use is the Hero engine in which zennimax online licensed in 07'. The same engine used for TOR and the ill fated Faxion Online. Good news is they have had it since 07' and hopefully have been working on it for a long time.
Only way I see this succeeding is if they do something revolutionary to make it stay true to the single player games, because if they go the path of WOW like TOR did with this engine it won't be offering anything that can beat WOW or even beat already established free games, like LOTRO.
