Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance is coming the the Nintendo 3DS in summer 2012, and now series lead Tetsuya Nomura confirms that plans are already in motion for whatever's coming next. He says that an announcement should be coming soon in a new interview published in Japan's Kingdom Hearts 3D Ultimania guide book (via Andriasang).
That's the sum total of what Nomura had to say about the future of the Kingdom Hearts series, but it should be enough to satisfy fans for now. While we've seen a number of handheld releases in recent years for the Square Enix series that mashes together various Disney worlds and Final Fantasy, the current console generation has been completely skipped. Kingdom Hearts 2 was released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005; there's no confirmation that Nomura's hinted-at reveal will be for Kingdom Hearts 3, but that's certainly the hope.

1. Whatever comes out should be PS3 exclusive
2. KH: 3D is adding to the story, so there has to be a KH3
3. I'll sell my wife and kids to pay for KH3

I can't believe that G4 didn't do their homework. Gamestop already has a release date and there are videos of gameplay and original japanese trailers. As far as the story line for those of you that are wondering what KH3 will bring, it's not too different from the other games that KH has cranked out. Chain of memories, Re:Chain of Memories, 358/2 Days, Birth by Sleep, all of these are great games that many of the fans of KH have come to know and love. As for "mushing together" Disney and Final Fantasy, that's what KH did with perfect balance and it's what it continues to do so with grace and reverence. Now look at me I'm ranting. I'm going off on a different stuff. I only meant to comment on G4's lack of investigation. like and comment if you feel the same

I think the consensus is KH3 would be amazing, but KH 1&2 HD collection is more likely. I tend to agree with that, and as much as I really want KH3, I'll take an HD collection as a stepping stone toward that goal. If for no other reason than a chance to play the games again.

Its strange. Kingdom hearts was always one of my most cherished games if not my most. I remember as a kid wanting to just be friends with Sora and all the disney characters so bad lol. I dont care what audience the new game shoots for if its a continuation of the story I grew up with...Im paying for it and being a child again for a day rofl.

Since Square isn't a PS exclusive with Final Fantasy anymore I wonder if they will make Kingdom Hearts multi-platform.

7 years since KH2, damn. KH came out in 2002, I was ten at that time- the lower end of the age demographic for that game. IF KH3 is announced it will likely have a release date in 2013, that means that for the original audience that grew up with that game will be about 21-26 years old. For a saga that is about growing up, shouldn't Nomura be concerned that his audience has already reached adulthood and that the series' major themes no longer connect?
The Kingdom Hearts series is very close to my heart as far as favorite games go but as excited as I am for a KH3 announcement, I also really wonder who the game is marketed to. Has Square Enix let the first KH generation pass on, while catering towards a new one? I guess I would just appreciate some closure from the series as I move forward.
Heres hoping Tetsuya Nomura hasn't forgotten who made KH so popular in the first place!

i can wait awhile for kingdom hearts 3 however if you make one make it fro xbox 360 as well and mkae it co-op so my friends can play as support characters and assist. and all you ps3 fans give us 360 people a break ps3 exclusive u guys already have enough of that sony has been ripping u guys off to be honest a pc is thew best system of all. enough of that ps3 exclusive better come out for 360!

Well if they announce a HD collection, that's about as good as announcing KH3 since often the HD collections proceed a new game in the series. I'll buy either, even though I still have KH2, I don't have the first one anymore.

Personally, I would like to see it stop being PlayStation exclusive.(I don't count the GBA and DS titles) But that's just me. KH3, maybe? Either that or an HD collection. Although only having a 360 kinda hinders being able to play any remake.

I swear to god, Square Enix. You make this a PS3 exclusive, or else I'll destroy you! Well obviously I can't touch Square Enix, but make it a PS3 exclusive or else your graphics abilities and power abilities and pretty much everything else will be 3 times worse and you'll lose the respect of most of your fans. I mean you already lost a lot of respect by porting FFXIII to the 360, so be smart this time.

i hope it's KH3 and not some handheld game again, i want the story to continue from where it left off, not adding more characters and trying to put more in to the story line.
