Video games are often blamed for violent behavior. We've seen it since the release of the first Mortal Kombat, and we're still seeing it today. Feedback wants to know why. This week Blair Herter, Donell Tucker, Stephen Johnson, and Nikole Zivalich discuss why violent games are still being used as a scapegoat for violent crimes.
The AUDIO MP3 of this episode of FEEDBACK is available here: Right-click and Save.
Where do you stand on the issue of violent video games? Do you think games can be used to train people?

Is it true that Adam's gone from G4? I think a part of me just died inside :(
SteveDaniels
Can we please have a Steve Johnson-ism counter? Like, every time you guys mention quaaludes or when Steve Johnson has some crazy rant. It would be like Adam's Obscure Reference counter.

when are we going to get the feedback with Adam, stephen, and Donell. Blair make it happen. don't really care what the topic is.

Video games don't make people violent. Lag does.

OK so the US armed forces do not try to "trick" you into shooting people. The training consists of target acquisition, threat assessment, and center mass aiming technique. They train their guys to figure out if they are looking down their sights at a bad guy or someone else. If there is close quarters friendly fire it is because of some other battlefield condition that can't be helped. Not because they saw movement and shot without thinking.

You know what makes me violent?
G4 not f#cking resigning Adam Sessler.
You guys about to fold?

Please make a donell zone web show. Seriously though he had a good point about the human nature versus media thing, maybe human nature and instinct doesn't dictate anything, maybe it's something fed to us by the media so we don't realize that everything we think has been carefully plotted.
poopikins
are we seriously still on this "issue"?

Well most people know that the whole violent videogames cause violence arguement is bs. As far as the military using videogames as a training tool, you guys mostly got it right. They are mainly using it to teach tactics and how to move as a unit to flank and cover each other's back. The idea being they expose you to as many stituations as possible so you should do better in real combat. Only thing they can't train is how each person reacts from actually killing someone face to face.

Oh Snap! I just read this is Adam-Ses-sler's last week on G4. I have always valued your reviews, soap box, and brand of humor. Best of luck Adam. I for one will truly miss you.

I think there should be a distinction between killing Israeli civilians vs. an FBI agent killing a criminal. Also to Mr. Johnsons point it is better to be the one tricked into killing the enemy then be one dead. They make it reflexive because every other nation is doing the same; in this day and age it isn t think, about it = don t kill them, think about it = dead.
Finally, censoring violent video games is a talking point because we allow it to be, it has very few defenders and with young people not being a very important voting block it only has a positive effect on those who think censorship is good and has no effect on the majority of the indifferent public.

I'm so d&%m sick of this debate....really...nothing else to talk about..

I play violent video games a lot and I am not a violent person in real life. This is another great episode of Feedback.
Lifeforsaken23
Its just like when you go and see some action movie.... its like yea i wanna go do that but in your head you know you really couldn't do it.... that guy has mental issues and that's why he did it
Grave_Chapel
First of all, teleporters. Are we the same person when we come out the other side, or where we replaced
And video games are simulations and AI, nether of which can acount for real world experience or the human factor of any situation. Growing up after watching Jurassic Park, I was a T-Rex, when I watched X-Men I was Wolverine or Cyclops, Ace Ventura Pet Detective I was doing things I did not know what they meant. Kid emulate copy and play everything. Why, because they are kids. In regards of the guy mentioned today, he is mental unstable. What he said did not match his actions, he;s just ill

Whoops. I mean Donnell.

I can't stand Darnel. NEVER have him on Feedback from now on, please. He contributes nothing and every single other feedback panelist is better than him by leaps and bounds.

Games do not make people violent..people make people violent. Playing video games does not make you anything that you were before you started playing. Does Rockband make me as good a drummer as Neil Peart? Does MLB12 give me the ability to hit a C.C. Sabathia fastball? Does Super mario Bros. make me eat mushrooms to grow big and produce fireballs? Does Need for Speed make me a better driver? The answer is NO!!! Do pornographic movies make me a better lover...ok wait..maybe that was is true?? lol
