Are Valve and Apple working together to create a gaming console? Recent puzzles pieces have all been falling in to place to make this rumor seem not too farfetched. Apple CEO Tim Cook was recently spotted at Valve's HQ and the gaming industry took notice. Apparently it's not everyday that the Apple CEO heads out, especially to visit the gaming industry's king of digital distribution.
Cult of Mac is reporting that Cook's trip to Valve was to discuss, what they're calling, Apple's full-on assault to take over the living room. Apple, aside from just bringing out the rumored Apple HDTV, also allegedly intends to bring out a home gaming console.
"According to sources to Cult of Mac, Apple is working on a television set with an iTunes-integrated touch screen remote and Siri-like voice command technology. The TV set will be coming before the end of 2012. Rumors and patents have said as much for the past year, so that’s nothing new," reports Cult of Mac.
In the past, Valve's CEO Gabe Newell has stated that he's interested in getting in to the hardware side of the industry as well. In an interview with Penny Arcade, Newell said, "Well, if we have to sell hardware we will. We have no reason to believe we’re any good at it, it’s more we think that we need to continue to have innovation and if the only way to get these kind of projects started is by us going and developing and selling the hardware directly then that’s what we’ll do."
He continued, "It’s definitely not the first thought that crosses our mind; we’d rather hardware people that are good at manufacturing and distributing hardware do that. We think it’s important enough that if that’s what we end up having to do then that’s what we end up having to do."
There are two companies at play here who both do their jobs very well and have some of the most absolutely passionate fans in the whole universe. If they fuse together to bring gamers an ultimate console, I believe all parties involved would be pleased with the result. It will just hurt our wallets, a lot.

I don't see it happening. Look at Apples history: Job's and Woz made it...then Job's gets booted. Company plummets. They get Job's back. Company does a little better, but then has to get assistance from Microsoft. Job's makes ipod and iphone and rules the market killing the Zune and Windows phone(for the most part) and also states that Apple will never get into the game industry as it's not his vision for the company. Job's passes...and within the year the rumor is Apple making a game console...Not the best way to remember your leader Exec's. It'll be interesting to see how long Apple rides on the success of Job's.
It wouldn't be wise for Valve to get tangled with a hardware manufacturer, because everyone has to lock down their platforms which is something Valve and other developer's don't want. I think Valve has a good thing going with Steam and getting it on as many systems as possible without being exclusive to any one system.

Apple makes crap products, haven't you noticed that the PSVITA is just like an IPOD but with analog sticks and actual buttons?
That's because we want gaming devices, you people buy an IPOD to play games? Then I call you stupid, they are meant for MUSIC! because the better games on a gaming device instead of a Music player...
Plus, Valve doesn't need itunes to run there gaming marketplace, they have the Steam store, if Vavle really needs Apple to help them; then im going to start needing my parents to feed me again, or for them to change my close for me. Because Valve is way smarter then to have Apple (Music/Video services) make a Gaming Consle!

Oh wonderful, something else for apple to overcharge people on.

Screw apple, and if they join, valve will have 1 less customer.

Apple and Valve together...? And Nerds, Fanboys and Hipsters everywhere mess themselves.
I like Apple products, but if they ever made a "console" -with Apple's crazy mystery mark-up, the thing would cost 2 to 3 times what anything from Sony, Nintendo or MS would, with a new "console" released about as often as new COD titles are by Activision... And people would still buy it.

now we're starting to get into murky waters: apple already dominates the portable music and smart-phone industry. They also operate itunes so they are getting even more money from that. a tv line and game console might put apple over the top and government might try to step in.

I don't buy anything made by Apple, so I won't buy a console with it's logo on it; even w/ Valve as a partner.

The last rumor I heard about a Valve console was that it would be open platform, so like a PC, users could be free to customize it with different software and whatnot. Now I am hearing what is basicly the exact opposite.
Because if I want to stream movies I bought through iTunes from my PC to my TV, it has to be via an Apple TV, or I cant do it.
But damnit, Apple overcharges because they know I will still buy it.

There's no way all 4 companies will do good in the console market. Some people will get it hard, who ? It's hard to tell now but, there's no way it'll be easy for people to buy 4 consoles, with a gaming PC.
yogi_bear_rules
The best thing to hope for is that apple is just funding it and leaving all the decisions to valve.
Perplexed_Waffle
Sounds interesting and it's always better to have more competition for my $$$.

I have a bad feeling about this... Mobil gaming for casual people fused with a console version that might sync saves will probably make gaming to casual as a whole. We already have developers like BioWare and Midway that are reducing the quality of their games stories to please a bigger audience. This would just encourage more developers to force their games into easy things for casual people to get a hold of.
DARKELITE3000
i sure hope they learned their lesson from their big flop of th apple pippin i think it would have made it was jst the selling that was bad

With games on both steam and app store starting crazy cheap and all makiing a serious tonne of money, I can see steam pursuading apple to take a loss on every console and bring it out dirt cheap. Knowing they'll make all their money back on all those 69p games.. Stuff like infinity balde 2 being 2.99 and selling as well as it does.. This console could be massive and cheap. They'd need to make sure that all the games have a mobile element, so you could sync your save with the iphone /ipad or iwhatever, giving gaming on the go an entirely new meaning.

Valve made the right choice in crating a service and letting the consumer choose what to run it on.
Making a dedicated console would be a step backwards.
crocodilius
Valve better not pull this Xbox-Microsoft sh#t
where they stop designing for PC and only
release the games for their terrible console.
SavageConcepts
last time apple tried to make a game console they almost went bankrupt and killed themselves, and jobs wont be there to save it from happening this time...
Gamerzfreak
nahh this a Microsoft world. It better be good and not dumbed down like all there other products.
U_NO_HOO
a gaming console would be cool, but I'm more interested in that apple TV that the article mentions they've been working on.
