Continuing The Story: Fallout New Vegas DLC

Fallout: New Vegas' Lonesome Road DLC Delayed

Developers don't always know whether or not they'll have the chance to continue their stories, so narrative devices like foreshadowing can be difficult to justify or work into a game's plotline. When Obsidian Creative Director Chris Avellone and his team were told they would have the chance to create four DLC packs for Fallout: New Vegas, it was a unique opportunity.  “That allows us, as writers, to do foreshadowing across titles and guarantee it will see the light of day,” Avellone said

The challenge of creating the Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road DLC packs for New Vegas lay mostly in the story, in creating DLC that would be meaningful after the game had ended and were still relevant to the player. There was also concern over the fact that Obsidian would know nothing about who the main character of the story was, as they stress player choice in creating and growing characters throughout the game. They began with what they knew about the player for sure.

More Fallout: New Vegas DLC Teased in Dead Money Expansion?

They knew the player was a courier, often delivered dangerous packages, and had traveled out west into the Mojave desert. Obsidian wondered what would have happened had the Courier delivered their package rather than being shot and having it stolen before the game began. That single, successful delivery would have completely changed the scope and layout of the entire Mojave Wasteland. Avellone and his team wondered about all the other side quests in New Vegas, and what if even a small percentage of them had the same world-shattering impact? That's when the team began to get excited about the four DLC packs.

Obsidian had some appreciable constraints to deal with. Where Fallout: New Vegas is a large area to explore, the DLC would be much more limited. “It's a small area you have to prop out, and that's all the real estate you have to draw the narrative arc,” Avellone said.

The amount of available time for each piece of DLC, four hours, was similarly limited. New Vegas had hundreds of characters and a huge voice cast, whereas the DLC would have to keep both the casting and the amount of spoken dialogue tight. Obsidian would only have ten thousand spoken lines of dialogue to work with throughout all four DLCs.

All of the DLC packs and stories also had to be able to exist in isolation from one another. None of them could have any direct references to any other DLC, because players could purchase any combination of them. “If someone doesn't have Dead Money, you can't reference those events in Lonesome Road. It creates a very interesting narrative challenge,” Avellone said.

Fallout: New Vegas Old World Blues Release Date Announced

Having a four hour limit on the narrative arcs turned out to be an advantage by helping Obsidian to focus their themes and stories. The limitation of a smaller voice cast kept the stories tight between three or four main characters. And New Vegas was so huge, Avellone and his team had a lot of content left over, like areas the player couldn't explore in the main game. With these limitations tackled the question became, “What sort of hooks can we include in the main game to hint these DLCs were going to happen?” said Avellone.

Obsidian made sure they dropped a lot of references to Joshua Graham, the fallen Caesar’s Legion commander known as the Burned Man, in New Vegas to set up the Lonely Hearts DLC. They made sure the player knew another courier could have taken the package that was stolen from the player before the game began, but refused the job once they saw the player's name was next on the list. The question of another courier who knew a lot about the player, and who could have set them up to be killed, set the stage for Lonesome Road. And the player's companion from the Brotherhood of Steel, Veronica, mentioned her mentor from the Brotherhood, Father Elijah, who would appear in Dead Money. Obsidian also used visual cues, like pre-war posters for the Sierra Madre hotel and the entertainer Dean Domino in New Vegas to foreshadow Dead Money.

Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition Announced

By knowing they would be able to do four DLCs from the very beginning, Obsidian was able to draw connections between the four packs which only players who purchased multiple packs would see. Again, there couldn't be direct references between them, and major characters from one of the packs couldn't appear in any of the other three in case the player killed them, but Avellone and his team managed to create the presence of the major characters throughout all the packs.

Working on the idea that all the major characters from the New Vegas DLC packs had been in all the locations among all four packs, Obsidian would look at maps and trace the paths of the major characters through them. Campsites, holodisc messages, graffiti and caches of weapons and equipment illustrate these paths to the players. This “reinforcing cast” system allowed the player to see the larger picture of these DLC character's lives, and how the player's actions affected them all.

Each of the DLC packs stood separate and complete on their own, but taken together formed a rich narrative arc. Avellone called it “a crazy experiment.” Obsidian took a chance, and it worked tremendously well.

The stories in the DLC were much more entertaining than the main story in the game. The main quest was pretty much done for me when I met Mr House, and saw the story was going to go one of three ways.

There are lots of good ideas for fallout wiki. I love fallout and it would be stupid not to continue the game. I can not decide which I prefer NV or F3.

Seriously, all the DLC kicked ass. This is how companies should be doing DLC. Each piece was worth the money. Also, I wouldn't mind if devs did throw in references and interactions between DLC. It'd be nice. Despite the fact players can buy whichever DLCs they want.

This was a good article. I have the ultimate edition of new Vegas and it is a gift that keeps on giving. Have to admit that despite the bugs, I enjoyed New Vegas more than Fallout 3.

i love the fallout games although i only started playing them when 3 came out i hadnt heard of them before. once i saw that Bethesda was doing it i knew it would be good because eldar scrolls is. tbh out of 3 and new vegas i prefer 3. sure new vegas has some nice features but it doesnt have the post apocalyptic feel that comes with fallout 3. i dont own all the DLC only dead money and Honest Hearts i would love to get the others but i dont have the money atm. as for the guy saying theres no future for this series. Bethesda made a new engine for Skyrim if they dont use the advantages of that in a new fallout game then they are stupid. the ability to see your inventory in detail in fallout would be amazing. just that 1 little thing would be great imagine the game itself. i hope they make more games. and i agree with sarid the title was misleading i thought maybe they were going to give info on a new DLC for new vegas not the existing ones

i will come out and say....yes the dlc were plaws to get more money but they def were worth it, tho i bought NV ultimate edition they shouldnt have waited so long to release like c mon right after skyrim was out? fo3 goty edition came out not to long after its original release ,this article just justifies why they took their time but at the same time they shouldnt have waited so long to fix the bugs. they shouldve just pushed the release date further to fix the kinks. i cant tell you how many times ive fallen into the side of a mountain or the pip boy freezing up , or mysterous stranger completely freezing me in vats, or wearing outfits of other tribes and as soon as u are seen the ppl who saw you are red on your compass at all times :/. not to mention it took them a while to add the companion beaker on the world map, so if you forgot say "boone" in the ncr embassy or middle of nowhere and forgot about him (also adding that not everyone has xbox live), you have to hunt him down just to get a new companion or get him back . but then the marker was around. (this is earlier times I know it didnt take long but it shouldve been there off the bat) then finally the companion dismissal comp was added , like they didnt take the time to think of these things earlier , they kept going on about weapon mods and choices in the interviews, yes its cool but not when your constantly finding errors that handicaps your gameplay , by making you travel back , and endure the stupid loading screens over and over. all in all when i bought ultimate edition , I enjoyed it. I had a lvl 30 ncr bound char with enclave armor and the enemies in the dlcs we re formidable opponents and gave me a run for my money (of course I didnt pull wuss and bring the AM rifle because obviously anything can be killed by AP rounds with that thing and i also play on very hard) but it was challenging , especially dead money. although most of the trinkets you get , are basically there for the battle of hoover dam , you can still go back and ravage the wastes with the holorifle or the superheated saturnite fist . either or it was a matter of "too little, too late" also when none of the updates were out wtf was the point of putting the 12.7 smg and pistol in the game , if A) theres no ammo besides maybe 5 bullets on the ncr rangers at hoover dam during the speech (yes i have played this game through many of times from when i didnt have xbox live to when i did have live, and i bought nv the day it came out from EB 98$ ) but yes there wasnt even a ammo recipe for making that ammo. it took a long time for ultimate to come out , and skyrim was already heavy in circulation and whoever has played that game can agree IT IS NOT A SHORT GAME!!!!! unlike fo3 , and im sry i disagree NV is not short , if you rush through it ya itll seem short but if you take the time to actaully acquire some of the special weapons and explore its a collective fun experience where you can be as picky as you want and thats what most ppl wanted from the new fallout title. in conclusion I completely understand now what took them longer because of the restrictions but they shouldnt have tickled everyone with the august release a few more months of coding wouldnt of resulted in people pointing out bugs (tho i have a huge amount of respect for bethesda) i cant code or make so im not knocking them in any way im just pointing out what we already know as gamers that are in love with this title and everything it had to offer.

How about DLC that made it so my game wouldn't glitch up every two minutes?

All 4 dlcs added alot of depth and additional hours to a game no one could get enough of. The Fallout universe is one that I feel I envy, providing a freedom no other game I have played has. Similar to Point Lookout in Fallout 3, the DLCs offer a little expansion which allows the player to explore further outside the constraints of the borders of Washington and the Mojave. The game has been fine tuned for the player which looks for extreme depth, the survivalist, the politician, the warrior. Though all missions followed a fetch/kill objective, Fallout manages to draw emotion from the player and questions the players life philosophies and ethics. There is much more to be appreciated from this series than just a 1st person shooter, after all, if it was that simple why am I on my third 200 hour long run through? The differences of this game from Borderlands are very clear cut, for one thing tact and diplomacy are non existant in Borderlands, a game which warranted only 60 hours of play from me. Sure there were millions of guns, but hunting them down got tiring very quickly. There is that element in Fallout, but I feel the player has a better time hunting down additional missions and tasks, something which is more rewarding than simply a new way to kill the enemy.
