Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut is a free DLC pack coming from BioWare in summer 2012 that will bring additional detail to the game's controversial ending, a morning press release confirms. The announcement notes that the Extended Cut pack will deliver "additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes" aimed at giving fans "deeper insight into how their personal journey concludes."
The download will of course be available for all platforms -- those being PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC -- and they won't cost a cent. Casey Hudson, the game's director, added: "We have reprioritized our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalized for each player.”
A cynical person might look at that quote and realize it means that actual play-oriented DLC will be coming later as a result. None of you readers are cynics though, right?
For those who need a spoiler-free recap, the March 6 release of Mass Effect 3 was greeted with a considerable amount of criticism by fans who felt dissatisfied with the way the game ended. The overriding complaint for most is that, for all the choices players have made over the course of three 40-plus hour games, the end didn't deliver enough in the way of answers and closure. Various fan-led protests spawned online as a result, and BioWare has patiently addressed those concerns every step of the way.
Your best bet for catching up on all that's transpired is probably the latest episode of Feedback, in which Blair Herter, Nikole Zivalich, Stephen Johnson, and Donell Tucker discuss the situation at length.
Also, just to be clear about this new content: don't expect a changed ending. This is a clarification, an expansion. One that will hopefully offer more context to those who feel that what's on the disc is lacking. Also, the press release notes that the Extended Cut DLC content will only be free until April 12, 2014. So... uhhhh... yeah. Be sure you get on that right away and stuff.

anyone that cried about the ending is a bitch.

Its kinda sad when Fallout 3 and new Vegas Did a far better job at showing an ending that compiles your moral , economic and political choices their consequences both during your adventure and many years beyond the lone wanderer and they did it in a decaying black n white reel slide show Mass Effect has aliens, robots, robotic aliens , insane High Res and the best they can do is color our same as other endings 3 shades of colors and even the color suck all just primary ones not cool ones like neon pink or bling bling gold.
P.S. Bioware- Even when you were the Savior of the Wastelands . vault 101's Hero didn't have to die to save peolpe and if your evil you can die an evil death by using the FEV Virus so no you dont have to day a heros death to be good...

F#(K YOU BIOWARE AND EA! You have just ruined one of the best gaming franchises I've ever had the oppourtunity to play. No new cinematic scenes will help me forgive both of you for the betrayal that you gave to me and all of the rest of the fans who love the franchise.

I agree with ernest79 no matter what they do, the ending will still be the bitch it will always be

Bioware are missing a huge opportunity here. If I was in charge of their marketing department I'd be promoting the release of the "Mass Effect Ending construction kit"!
Okay yeah, so that's why I'm not in charge of anything :P

i'm concerned about the timing of this announcement, because it is no coincidence that they announced the dlc just before PAX so they already have the "we're working on it " answer ready to deflect any questions. also on the part of EA it comes right after they have been voted worst company in america on the consumerist. the most troubling thing is that this dlc can be used to undermind any more valid complaints fans have regarding the ending and the new dlc, especially when it comes to the public perception of upset fans. EA has given themselves the perfect "well we gave you what you wanted and if you still don't like it you're just entitled, whinny, etc....." defense.

k so the plan is not to actually fix anything. but to explain why everything wrong is right because of artistic blah blah blah.
dont piss down my back and tell me its raining.

EA won the "Worst Company in America Award" recently (reported here on G4). Normally the Golden Poo trophy is given on a red pillow, but this year (I kid you not) they gave EA the choice of a red, green or blue pillow.
Sad that Bioware couldn't swallow their pride and ego by doing the right thing. Used to be I'd buy any game with "bioware" on the box because I knew it would be an amazing game. Now we've had a lackluster DA2 and the ME3 fiasco. Thing is, they couldn't fix DA2 but they COULD fix ME3's ending... but refuse to do so.
Farewell Bioware, looks like I'll be moving on to other games in the future. SWTOR sub staying cancelled as well.

To BioWare,
"Your veteran fans will remember the good times with games like Baldur's Gate, KotoR and Mass Effect 1. But for the most part you will always be remembered as that one company that conducted one of the biggest screwjobs in gaming history. Nobody can talk about their memorable moments with Garrus or their favorite mission from the trilogy, because your actions this past month have been too insulting and glaring to ignore.
When we put our trust in you, you lied to us. When we pleaded with you, you ignored us. In the span of 10 minutes and the following 30 days after, you have managed to kill one of the most beloved works of fiction, and ruined your company's good name. And yet it didn't have to be that way. You had the rare opportunity to make things right. An opportunity almost nobody gets. Yet you allowed your ego to squander it.
You are dead to so many people at this point. Figuratively speaking, you're a bloated corpse in a coffin and the only thing people can do is poke at you with sticks, wondering just what happened."

swanycharges Thats the point its Biowares game, and its Biowares ending. Not one single person complaining about the end has the power to change it, only Bioware. We do have, via social media and our future consumer choices, have the right and ability to voice our displeasure at Bioware and the ending. Bioware gave the fans a product that they where not happy with, and the as a result have potentially lost thousands of fans and millions in future sales, and that is also Biowares fault. I am not forcing anyone to change anything, I'm just voicing my unhappy and unsatisfied opinion. Additional content or a changed ending is on Bioware alone and if they do provide additional content. It is for one reason and one reason only too avoid losses of future millions. Thats why this whole games are art and artistic ownership arguement is a joke, its all about the dollars and the potntial loss of future dollars.

I hope they don't forget to include that sad scene where Bilbo leaves on the Elven ship :P

Is it just me or is this like the ending of Lost all over again

ill bet anything that the people who say the ending is fine and are bashing on the folks who want a real ending are still gonna download the dlc, they are the definition of hypocrisy

I'm glad BioWare didn't cave and decide to change the ending. I'm sure I'll appreciate the extended ending as I have loved all their products, but I'm bummed it will lead to a delay in the other planned DLC. I was mostly disappointed with the Feedback episode as it failed to really address a lot of the details and while I was glad to shout loudly in agreement with Stephen Johnson, I lost all respect for Nikole as she whined away with no desire to have a logical conversation. In fact, after commenting on the Feedback post leading up to the episode more times than I should have, I've found that the complainers' arguments all add up to one thing: "Whaaaaaaaaaaaa! Whaaaaaaaaaaaaa!" I tried having a debate. Apparently some people believe that repeating the same idiotic complaints over again is an effective way to make a point. I really need to just ignore this insanity and go back to playing Mass Effect 3 so I can relive that beautiful ending again and again.

This ending reminds me of the awful ending in Red Dead Redemption. Shepard was going to die regardless of what choice he made. I don't care what they put together for the DLC in the summer, if it still ends in Shepards death then its still gonna blow chunks. Fifty years after a war, heros are remembered with honor. It dosen't matter who the hero or circumstances, the day he died was a tragedy. This is not the emotion I wanted to end the game on after playing through each of the 3 games countless times to create the perfect game. We have an emotional attachment to this game series. Thats what kept us hooked. Shepard deserved a victory parade and a seat on the council, not a heros death.
